Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures. The creation of the first alebrijes is attributed to Pedro Linares, a Mixe Indian artisan from Oaxaca,. When he was in his thirties, Linares fell ill with a high fever, which caused him to hallucinate. In these feverish dreams, he was in a forest with rocks and clouds, many of which turned into wild, unnaturally colored creatures, which frequently features wings, horns, tails, fierce teeth and bulgy eyes. While seeing the creatures, he heard a crowd of voices which repeated the nonsensical word “alebrije.” After he recovered, he began to create the creatures he saw using papier-mâché and cardboard.

Alicia Reyes McNamara creates ornate sculptures and paintings that weave elements of Latin American folk art and mythology into dreamlike, multi-layered works of art. Deeply influenced by her upbringing in a Mexican American community and her later travels throughout South America, Reyes McNamara explained that her Latina identity is a major focal point of her work. "[My] memories whether embellished, diluted, or sincere remain as truths in a history. I am interested in the fine line between memory and imagination within our personal and cultural mythologies," she wrote in her artist statement. Many of the figures she sculpts and paints are embellished with smaller images that function like hieroglyphics, giving with the work a narrative quality through the added symbolism.

Drip, drip, drip. . . All of them are different. This one is Dylan's and my favorite. I'd like to cover an entire wall with them. We've got them in our Etsy shop for an especially low price, just to be nice. All gone! Raindrops scattered across the continent (and another continent too). I think we'll make another batch soon. Which one do you like best?
Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald uses his works as a means of resurrecting the idyllic worlds he once found in the industrial surroundings of his youth. Raised in Grand Rapids, MI, he looks to the raw beauty and inherent potential of his manufacturing hometown as an endless source of creative inspiration. Working from found materials, Fitzgerald constructs miniature versions of soap box cars, experimenting with futuristic forms yet amplifying a profound resonance with the past. Each car is then finished with designs culled from an old 1945 industrial directory, a nod to the small business sponsorship of box car racing. Constructed with meticulous care, each vehicle is imbued with a sense of history and latent vitality, traceable in the minute details of the cramped driver's cockpit and the weathered charm of its hand-painted finish. Chipboard, wood, mixed media, collage, acrylic paint, and oil paint. Set on a custom wood stand. Additional Dimensions: Car: 16"W x 3.5"D x 4"H Stand: 5.25"W x 2"D x 1.75"H
