Happy Sunday! Some family friends of mine celebrated their 20th anniversary in December, and I had the honor of catering their anniversary celebration as well as making a cake for the occasion! I wanted to base the cake off of their original wedding cake, but update it as well. Many of my friends know my position on wedding cake with columns, staircases, and fountains like this one! They are SO early 90’s! Thankfully this couple’s original wedding cake wasn’t nearly as over the top as you can see: For their anniversary cake, I decided to stack the cakes directly on top of each other instead of separating them for columns and use fresh flowers in reds, burgundies, and different shades of greens to mimic the flowers on their December wedding cake. The flavor was Red Velvet (yum!), so even the pieces of cake looked somewhat Christmas-y too! The finished cake featured red carnations, deep red roses, a few sprays of lime green flowers, baby's breath, and dark green leaves. Happy Anniversary to Les and Laura!
Mesmerized.
This is my Great-Grandfather with one of his creations (I think I have a way to go!)
Found image. It is interesting how this cake is decorated with so much foliage.

What's old is new again. All these cakes are from the 1990's. I love to bake from scratch using the best chocolates, real Wisconsin butter, and King Arthur flour...just to name a few ingredients. Popular cake flavors: Lemon Ambrosia-lemon cake with homemade lemon curd filling topped with seasonal fresh fruit and Italian buttercream. Chocolate anything-chocolate cake and fill with chocolate ganache or flavored buttercreams, any sort of fruit-the sky is the limit. Mocha Spice-a coffee spiced cake with a nice mocha buttercream. Garnish with coffee beans. Carrot Cake-I have 2 versions-one classic and one with apricots, golden raisins and pecans. Both frosted witha cream cheese frosting. Yellow and White Cakes-I spent 15 years hunting down the best recipe and I found it!!!! Mix and match these cake flavors with anything. Tropical Orange-Orange cake filled with fresh orange curd, strawberries, banana's and pineapple frosted with a coconut buttercream and garnish with toasted coconut. The beauty of scratch cake is you can really do any flavor you can imagine-these are just the popular flavors!!!

Today, I am joining Stephanie at Angelic Accents for her To Have and To Hold Wedding Party. Last year, I shared my magical wedding gown for Stephanie's party. This year, I've moved on to wedding cakes. I thought it would be fun to share some of the wedding cakes of my family members. This is my parent's wedding cake, 1955. My mom said is was very hot and humid that day and the cake was practically melting. This next picture I just had to include, also from my parent's wedding album. Heaven forbid you have an Italian wedding without a cookie tray.... ....and I mean a cookie tray that requires two people to carry! lol My oldest sister got married in 1980. She had a waterfall cake and instead of the traditional bride & groom, she had Annalee wedding mice atop the cake. My second oldest sister got married in 1983 . Her cake had a bridge. When my sister brought her wedding album over to me, she remarked about how ugly everything was, especially the paneling & air vent over their heads in this picture! lol What's even funnier is that when I opened my oldest sister's wedding album and found the picture of her wedding cake, I found the same paneling & air vent! lol (It's true, go back up & look.) I don't have a picture of my brother's wedding cake from 1987. My sister-in-law is so non-sentimental, I was afraid to call and ask for a photo of her wedding cake for fear she'd say she's thrown away the wedding album years ago! Yeah, I am serious. My wedding cake, 1992, was a strawberry cheescake. In 1992, I was not a fan of cheesecake, but it was the only request my husband made, so how could I refuse him? When he fed me that cake, I made the most horrible face and I do believe I said, "I hate cheesecake" on the video. I am proud to say, I now love cheesecake! As a side note...believe it or not, the picture of my wedding cake was taken in the same location as my two sisters' wedding cakes. Thank goodness the reception hall remodeled by then! lol My niece is getting married in October 2012. Her cake will most likely look something like this: Wedding cakes sure have come a long way since 1955, haven't they? If you enjoyed this post today and would like to see more posts of wedded bliss, head on over to Stephanie's blog, Angelic Accents. This party really is alot of fun to participate in. Thanks for joining me today!
