By the early 16th century rulers began to recognize the political value of distributing portraits of themselves to followers as a way of reminding them of, and rewarding them for, their allegiance. In this, Francis I, King of France from 1515 to 1547, was very adept. Here, he presents himself as fashionably elegant, pious (the religious hat badge), yet physically powerful. One famous portrait of the king was made around 1525 by the Netherlander Joos van Cleve. Based on this painting, now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the artist's workshop produced at least 20 copies, including this one, to be given by the king as gifts.

St Francis original icon hand-painted in egg tempera on 300gsm acid free smooth (HP) watercolour paper. The halo is gilded with 24 carat gold leaf. The icon has been professionally framed in Ayous bare wood and hand waxed to finish. It measures 44cm wide by 51.5 length and fitted with picture cord ready to hang. This icon of St Francis was part of the body of work for my icon painting diploma, taught by leading Orthodox iconographer Aidan Hart at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts, London. Saint Francis is a well known and much loved saint worldwide. He was a devoted advocate of the poor. Many of the stories that surround his life say that he had a great love for animals and the environment. He was so committed to imitating the life and work of Christ that he is sometimes remembered as 'alter Christus' meaning "another Christ." His feast day is celebrated on 4th October and he is patron of Italy, the environment and animals.
