Save for future trip planning: At The Catarata Vuelta del Canon, Costa Rica The Catarata Vuelta del Canon Trail was without a doubt my favorite hike in all of Costa Rica. This adventure takes you through the cloud-forest highlands of Bajos del Toro & right up to a two-tiered, punchbowl waterfall pouring out of a lush green canyon. I can promise you this: Catarata Vuelta del Canon is one of the most incredible waterfalls you’ll see in your entire life The trail begins on a narrow, gated trail along a countryside pasture leading up to a forest edge about a mile in. From there, you’ll hike along a dense mountain forest trail, thick with banana plants & palm leaves. The path is primitive & pretty muddy regardless of the season, so watch your step! The route crosses over a river 8 times one way (16 crossings round-trip) throughout the wooded area. Some parts of the river are deeper than others, so my hiking stick was REALLY helpful in the crossings (before it broke in half - R.I.P.). The last quarter mile before the falls is mostly in water. If you enjoy river hiking, then this is the trail for you!CATARATA VUELTA DEL CAN ENE ON:▫️Location: Bajos del Toro▫️Distance: 8.9 miles RT (challenging)▫️Elevation Gain: 701 ft▫️Route Type: Out & back▫️Total Time: 4+ hours▫️Recs: waterproof hiking boots | water shoes | hiking stick | wet bag | sunscreen | bathing suit | snacksIMPORTANT INFO:A guide is required to complete this waterfall hike, as it goes through private property. You can book a solo or group tour through a few small, locally-owned companies to hike to the waterfall. Message me if you are planning your trip, & I’ll share the name, WhatsApp number & other details about the company we booked through From @lauren_mclalin 11. Escape to paradise and discover the breathtaking beauty of Costa Rica: the Nauyaca Falls Located in Costa Rica, the Celeste River is a natural wonder that has become a popular tourist destination. The river's bright blue color is caused by a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals and the water, and visitors can hike through the surrounding rainforest to see the river's stunning waterfalls and pools From @lauren_mclalin 12. Paradise on earth exists From @lauren_mclalin 13. Would recommend adding Bajos Del Toro to your trip for a little extra Costa Rican magic From @lauren_mclalin 14. Save for your future trip to Costa Rica Have you ever seen a split-colored river? We hadn’t either! Rio Celeste (Celeste River)was one of the most incredible rivers we’ve ever seen, & we highly recommend making it one of your stops!Deep inside Tenorio Volcano National Park lies a unique wonder that you’ll have to see to believe! The bright turquoise color of the Celeste River looks fake, almost like the National Park put dye in it! But it’s 100% real. The vivid color is actually the result of an optical illusion called Mie Scattering (the same phenomenon that happens when you see a rainbow)! However, Mie Scattering doesn’t explain the quick color change at the confluence of the Quebrada Agria & the Río Buena Vista - two streams that merge to create Rio Celeste I know this is a lot, but stay with me here! Here’s what I learned from the info on the Rio Celeste Trail:The confluence that you are seeing in this video is called the Dye Point (el teñidero). It’s determined that the combining of the acidic stream & the neutral stream makes the minerals bigger. Some of these minerals reach the bottom of the river white sediment, but most of them stay suspended in the water & reflect the sunlight, causing the bright blue color to appear! The National Park prohibits swimming, but there’s a great free swimming hole to cool off in right down the road, underneath a bridge! Just type in Rio CelesteFree Pool in Google Maps.Happy adventuring! From @lauren_mclalin 15. The best time to visit Costa Rica is between December and April when the weather is at its driest and brightest. I’d also recommend traveling in the country’s green season, from May to June or in November. This is when you catch the seasons in transition, and the national parks are quieter From @sallytrubella 16. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, where summer dream come true From @josephinelrx 17. Lake Botos About 1.5 hours away from San José, you can visit the Poás Volcano, in Valverde Vega, Costa Rica. There, you’ll find a separate, on-site 20 minute trail that leads to Lake Botos To enter the park, tickets cost $15USD for non residents and $1.50USD for residents.
