There's nothing wrong with having a 'baby face,' but these people just took this idea to an uncomfortable new level.

I’m a sucker for the British period drama Call The Midwife. The show has its corny moments admittedly, but it’s fascinating to watch how pregnant women, midwives and nuns living in the poor East End of London during the 1950s dealt with safe childbirth in the era before epidurals, C-sections or even adequate sanitary conditions. So when I saw these fabric wombs dated around 1760 I was immediately transfixed and interested. Pioneering midwife Angélique Marguerite Le Boursier du Coudray created the fabric wombs as a teaching tool: In 1759 the king commissioned her to teach midwifery to rural women to reduce infant mortality. Between 1760 to 1783, she traveled rural France, sharing her knowledge with women. During this time, she is estimated to have directly trained 4,000 students. Du Coudray invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, called “The Machine.” Various strings and straps serve to simulate the process of childbirth. The head of the infant mannequin has a shaped nose, stitched ears, hair drawn with ink, and an open mouth, with tongue. While they’re semi-creepy to look at, I’m sure they saved a lot of lives. “Angels Garlanding the Infant Jesus” Ann MacBeth We were immediately drawn to this picture when we found it, a rare and largely unknown treasure of Catholic art. It's Art Nouveau in style, one of our all time favorites, and Catholic examples of it are uncommon. The colors are rich and subtle, the composition is intricate and lush. Angels are attending the baby Jesus, worshipping him, bringing him beauty, doting on him. Art Nouveau flourished in the opening years of the 20th Century. It was a popular style, not classical, so for the most part only younger Catholic artists did work in this style, and not for long, because within a few years the style had fallen out of fashion. Ann Macbeth (1870-1948) was primarily known as an embroidery artist and teacher, though she also did paintings, especially early in her career. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1897 to 1901, and her embroidery work and paintings were often featured in the London edition of The Studio, an important Art Nouveau magazine. This painting was a watercolor with gouache and gold paint. It fits in style with the “Madonna and Child” by Jean Antoinette Labrousse, another gorgeous and rare Art Nouveau Catholic painting available in our shop. There hasn't been a newborn baby in my home for a while. My son, Ben, turned 15 last May. While feeding a teenager healthy, unprocessed food has its own host of issues, I've been thinking a lot about babies again. No, I'm not expecting. You see, in less than a month, I will be an uncle. My brother and his wife are due right around Thanksgiving, and our whole family is excited. But it has me thinking–what exactly is in some of this stuff we feed our babies? Ideally most newborns and infants are breast fed. Sometimes, however, things just
