Ornate jewelry boxes set the stage for tiny painted scenes filled with nearly-microscopic human figurines. The boxes are meticulously crafted by Canadian-Trinidadian artist Talwst, who uses mixed media to explore the narrative of art history in combination with elements of contrasting cultures. Although his vintage boxes may cast an ancient light on the scene, the boxes encapsulate a present day cultural commentary through their arrangements. Talwst works out of his studio in Toronto, Ontario and has a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Mississauga through April 12th. More

Picture the scene - Five years ago, one Solange Beaugiron, a 91-year-old French lady, passed away in the south of France, leaving in her estate a mysterious Paris apartment located in the 9th arrondissement, less than a mile away from Opéra Garnier. The apartment belonged to her grandmother, a one-time actress and high-class courtesan known as Marthe de Florian (1864-1939). Marthe died in the apartment that she shared with her only son, Henri (1884-1966). In 1942, under the German occupation of Paris, Henri's daughter, Solange, relocated down south. Meanwhile Henri carried on leaving at the apartment until his death. Solange never returned to clear the property, instead limiting her involvement to paying the obligatory taxes and expenses. Miraculously for all of those years that the Paris apartment had been put to a forced and restful slumber like Sleeping Beauty incarnate, it remained untouched. A thin veil of dust enshrined its contents, as if to preserve them from the harshness of the passing of time. When the De Florian estate officials carefully pushed open that front door, they were faced with the stuff of fairy tales that transcends any secret expectation: a treasure trove of time-defiant relics and antiques-worthy artefacts (the monumental vanity table to begin with!), not to mention piles of love letters, and a portrait of Marthe by Italian painter and personal admirer of hers, Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931) that would go on to fetch a record €2.1 million at auction! The apartment got Mirabelle's mind into overdrive. I imagine that some of the artefacts I have included below might well have found themselves at home in such a place! Just think of those little classy - short of rococo - vintage pieces that Madame de Florian would have fancied surrounding herself with: - Are there any artefacts which you would like me to add to Madame de Florian's apartment? Let's have a little fun and email me the links to [email protected] and I shall upload the pictures to this very article. Sources: (1-3) Madame de Florian's apartment, via Démotivateur. (3) Portrait of Madame de Florian by Giovanni Boldini. The painting was found in the apartment. (4) Antique French Pink-Lined Trinket Box (jewellery case) and (5) Victorian 14K Gold Amethyst and Seed Pearl Ring, both via Paris Hotel Boutique. (6) Pellucid Earrings by Sorrelli, and (7) Pont d'Arcades Clutch by Santi, both via BHLDN. Табакерки из Эрмитажа. Часть 2. В XVIII в. в России распространилась мода на табакерки для нюхательного табака. Императрица Екатерина II с увлечением их собирала. Многие из них были украшены прекрасными камеями или росписями, сама императрица называла свою страсть к камеям "камейною болезнею".…
I figured since I teased you all with the ad for one of the estate sales that I went to this weekend, that I had better take pictures of what I bought there! I actually went to 4 estate sales this weekend - I filled up my car twice - that's back seat *and* trunk! I was feeling the pressure to shop shop shop, since for 2 of the estate sale companies, it was their last sale of the season - no more til spring! And of course garage sales are pretty much over now as well, so the next few months will be hard going as far as finding inventory is concerned... I acted accordingly, like a squirrel storing nuts for the winter! ;) Anyway, of course the stuff in the photos for the ad was all long gone when I got there, but I did still find some goods: A couple of weeks ago I found and sold two Syroco Wood lots - a pair of fruit wall hangings and a pair of horse bookends. I hadn't found or sold Syroco before, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is pretty collectible. Well, of course, this weekend I found a bunch of it, at this sale and another one - isn't it funny how that works? I don't know if it is just because now it is "on my radar" or what, but it does seem to happen like that pretty often... The mirror and the two framed floral prints are both Syroco: And I also got a set of 4 diamond shaped floral wall hangings: I think I will do a Featured Collectible post about Syroco when I get these and the other pieces I bought this weekend listed, so stay tuned! Ok, let's look at what else I got: A set of milk glass hobnail candle holders, and a pair of Kissing Angel figurines from Japan. A made in Japan angel figurine, and a green pottery vase that I think is Haeger, but the stamp on the bottom is impossible to make out. :( A set of 4 white plastic snack trays with cool black coasters that are built right in! A pair of ceramic Japan busts - a boy and a girl, a little Japan bird figurine, and I think my favorite find of the weekend: A Japan musical jewelry box - you open the lid, the music starts and the little ballerina spins! Too adorable. I also bought three sets of dishes - Studio Nova, Tulip Blue - Towne House, Regency - and Syracuse Old Ivory, Arcadia. Yes, my back hurt when I got home!
