c1910 postcard view looking south on North Third Street in Lafayette, Indiana. The Tippecanoe County Court House is just outside this view on the left. Trolley cars were navigating Third Street in the distance and a streetcar was crossing on Columbia Street at the left edge of the view. Several pedestrians were on the sidewalks. All of the personal vehicles were horse-drawn buggies and wagons. Several businesses can be identified. The sign on the building at the southeast corner of Third and Columbia Streets advertised the FARMERS & TRADERS BANK (303-307 Columbia Street). The large 4-story red building beyond that intersection housed the S. C. Curtis Sons & Co. business, dealers in wholesale dry goods. They are listed in a 1902 business directory (2-6 North Third Street) and are shown at that location in the 1915 Sanborn™ fire insurance map set for Lafayette. On the northwest corner of the Columbia Street intersection, the sign advertised the W. H. ZINN CO. DEPARTMENT STORE (102-106 North Third Street). The GAVAN sign on the small building north of Zinn’s identified the location of Frank Gavan’s tailoring business (110 North Third Street). The HUB CLOTHING sign on the side of the building at 114 N Third Street is only partially visible. According to the 1907 Sanborn™ map set, a sporting goods business (116 North Third Street) occupied the small two-story building north of the clothing store. The 1902 directory lists a John E. Bixler with a sporting goods business at this address. The same map set shows an insurance office in the small building (118 North Third Street) next to the sporting goods store. The 1902 directory lists a Fred R. Levering with an insurance inspection business at this address. The WELLS-YEAGER BEST CO. sign along with the DRUGS signs on top of the building and on the awning at 120 North Third Street announced the location of a wholesale and retail drug business. The THIEME & SCHUESSLER CO. advertised their location (122-126 North Third Street per the 1907 Sanborn™ map set) via the awning and a sign above the awning. Their dry goods, cloaks and furnishings business occupied all three floors. The awning at 128 North Third Street advertised (Miss) L. BECKER & CO. and the MILLINERY sign above identified the nature of her business. Next door (130 North Third Street), the sign and awning advertised the J. W. DEALY TRUNK FACTORY. The next business was the GLOBE CLOTHING AND TAILORING CO. (134 North Third Street). The N. W. BOX SHOE CO. was located on the southwest corner (136 North Third Street) at Main Street. All of these businesses except Zinn's and Globe are listed in a 1902 business directory. Zinn's appears on the 1907 and 1915 Sanborn maps. From a private collection.
