This word list contains long /a/ words for decoding practice and fluency. The list is sorted into four groups: long /a/ words with 'ai' only, long /a/ words with 'ay' only, long /a/ words with 'a' in an open syllable* and long /a/ words with eigh, ea, ei, and ey. In addition, teachers have the option of using the list in which the vowel is highlighted in red or the list with no vowel highlight. Teachers also have the option to print/use the list with the more primary looking font for younger readers or the list with the less primary looking font for older students or adults who are working on foundational reading skills. *When practicing words with 'a' in an open syllable, students should already be familiar with all of the short vowels, the 'consonant-le syllable and the 'r-controlled' /er/ grapheme. There is the option of reading this word list with or without the word divided into syllables.
