When designer Marissa Stokes was referred to the Vero Beach homeowners in 2019, she had just started her own firm—Marissa Stokes Interior Design. Based in New York, Stokes met with the owners, who have a primary residence on Long Island, and their design styles gelled perfectly. “The clients and I had the same aesthetic in mind,” Stokes says.

This 4-bed Southern-style house plan is a design masterpiece. The exterior of the home features a trio of dormers and a covered front porch. A touch of modern is mixed in with the contrasting siding color on the bump-outs that can be found on either side of the front porch. Inside the home, you are greeted by a large entryway. To the left of the entry, there is a study with patio access. On the other side of the entry, there is a wonderful formal dining room that has direct access to the kitchen. The kitchen, breakfast area, and great room flow seamlessly together in a well thought out open layout. The kitchen includes a large island and a walk-in pantry. The great room lies under a soaring 2 story ceiling and is warmed by a fireplace that is flanked by built-in bookshelves. The great room allows great natural light and airflow through 3 sets of french doors to the rear covered patio. The master suite is on the left side of the main floor and has a trayed ceiling and front patio access. The bathroom includes a wetroom, an enclosed toilet, his/her vanities, a makeup counter, and a large walk-in closet. Upstairs, you'll find 3 additional bedrooms. Bedroom 2 has access to its own bathroom while bedrooms 2 and 3 share a jack and jill bathroom. Each bedroom enjoys its own walk-in closet. A large loft area with a built-in entertainment center makes for a great playroom for the kids. Back on the main floor, the homes 3 car side load garage accesses the home through a convenient mudroom that includes a bench and lockers as well as laundry room access. An optional finished basement adds 1312 sq ft to the home and includes a large family room, a bar with a wine room, a table area, and an additional bedroom that has a safe room in the back of the closet.
Design inspiration can be discovered in a plethora of places. Sometimes it comes from the timelessness and familiarity of a storied historic home, while other times it is derived from the essence of an exotic destination. But architectural designer Matthew Voelkel did not have to travel back in time or to a far-flung locale to source inspiration for his clients’ new home in Old Mandeville. He found it, quite literally, in their own backyard.

Lake Lyndon B. Johnson (or Lake LBJ, as it is commonly known) in Marble Falls, Texas, has long been a special place for Tina and Tom Shults. “This is an area our family has traveled to for more than 50 years,” says Tina Shults, noting Tom’s grandfather had a home here, and later in life, they watched their own children grow up on the water. The constant-level lake, located about 30 minutes outside of Austin, continued to be a respite for the couple and their family through the years, prompting them to want to build their own vacation home in the vicinity.
