I am delighted to offer this famous and rare modernist sterling silver cuff bracelet made by Ed Wiener in 1948 It is pictured on the cover of Modernist Jewelry 1930- 1960 The Wearable Art Movement by Marbeth Schon and on page 64 with a full page photo. There is also a full page photo (page 12) in "Jewelry by Ed Wiener" an Exhibition at the Fifty/50 Gallery in New York Dec 1988 - Jan 1989. Measurements: Please look closely at the photos with the ruler for measurements. The bracelet has a twist configuration. It is currently sized for a large wrist, though constructed in a manner that a jeweler could adjust it. Marked "STERLING ED. WIENER" on the inner bottom edge of the cuff Excellent Vintage Condition with some tarnish as I did not want to polish this amazing piece
Photo: Nordiska Style I found this pewter necklace a few days ago in a second-hand store. It's swedish, and it's signed Rune Tennesmed. Designed in the late 60's or 70's. I love the orange glass beads! It's always fun to find a piece that catches your eye, signed or not, without having any idea who the designer might be. Then you make some research and you end up going to bed at 2 am because you can't stop reading about your new interest! I don't know why, but I never really took the time to read about scandinavian modernist jewelry. Those clean lines, geometric shapes and organic designs inspired by nature (melting icicles, volcanic lava, rocks, moss, etc.)... I just can't get enough! Norway Design was a large shop in Oslo with a branch also in Trondheim C1958. The company was established by Per Tannum. The aim of this center was to preserve and utilize traditional Norwegian arts and crafts. In the field of jewelry, new concepts with simple modern designs were introduced at Plus executed in gold silver and pewter. The common mark for Plus is superimposed letters "ND" which appear as a thick letter "N" on the jewelry along with the + sign. This mark is then accompanied by the designer's name or initials. About Pair of Iconic Art Smith "Modernette" Cuffs from the 1940's in sterling silver. Pioneering jeweler Art Smith created some of the most iconic designs in the Modernist period. Examples of his works are housed now in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Inspired by surrealism, biomorphicism, and primitivism, Art Smith’s jewelry is dynamic in its size and form. Although sometimes massive in scale, his jewelry remains lightweight and wearable. Trained at Cooper Union, Art Smith, an African American, opened his first shop on Cornelia Street in Greenwich Village in 1946. One of the leading modernist jewelers of the mid-twentieth century, Smith was also an active supporter of black and gay civil rights, an avid jazz enthusiast, and a supporter of early black modern dance groups. Each cuff signed. An incredibly rare opportunity to find a matched period pair by this artist, these are the definition of "Artist" jewelry. 6.5" length x 2" height. 1" opening.
