Good morning! I’m so excited to be with you today to share my Old Nine quilt – it’s in the brand new “I Love Nine Patches” book from Martingale. I was asked to tell you a little bit about myself so… I grew up in Indiana and owned a quilt shop named Needle in the Haystack before moving to Texas in 2012. I work in the Marketing Department at Moda with a group of super-talented, creative women – best. job. ever. My primary responsibilities are overseeing our kit program and working on “special projects”.

The Improved Nine Patch A very popular 20th-century pattern Particularly in scrappy pastels with white ovals between the nine patches There is no square block. It's BlockBase #306. Today we call it Improved Nine Patch or Glorified Nine Patch. The first name was published in the Rural New Yorker in February 1930, pretty early in the 1930s quilt revival. Most of the quilts were probably made from this 1933 Kansas City Star design. It takes some piecing skill for the curves but quilters were crazy about Double Wedding Rings at the time so this design of similar construction fit right in. Although someone at the Star thought this would be a good beginner's quilt in 1935. The Quilt Index has quite a few Lulu Schock from the West Virginia Project & the Quilt Index. Including some two color variations. From the Indiana Project & the Quilt Index. Mary E. Garrett worked in a clothing factory and made hers out of factory cutaways---shirt chambrays. All these look to have been pieced after the pattern appeared in 1930. I had BlockBase draw a pattern to fit on an 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of paper. Print this out for a 6-/12" circle. You might want to turn it into a block. Dolores Hinson published it this way in her 1978 book A Quilter's Companion and Quilters Newsletter sold templates for this block about the same time. UPDATE: I found a block-style pattern, probably the earliest published in Comfort magazine, maybe in the 1920s. Hammock Quilt Block Merikay Waldvogel let me photograph Mildred Dickerson's scrapbooks of patterns and this drawing by Mildred (?) shows it with a different name than we'd use. Templates might be the answer. Fons & Porter sell some here: http://www.shopfonsandporter.com/product/Glorified-Nine-Patch-Template-Set/fabric-and-notions Or just go to eBay and buy a quilt. Dated 1965 And by the way, any nine patch could be improved with polka dots.
Lots of polka dots add a sense of playfulness and whimsy.

Participants just completed the last exchange for the Reproduction Nine Patch Block Swap at Little Quilts. We've put together different layouts (above and see actual quilts below) using some or all of the blocks. Sizes range from throw size to full size quilts. Patterns could be suggested layouts for any 6" block. Patterns are $2 each. Reproduction Nine Patch 85" x 85" - made by Kathie West. Kathie used her 72 blocks from the Block Swapper Exchange and made a few more to complete the quilt. Nine Patch Strippy. Mary Ellen made this strippy 66" x 80" and used only 32 of the Nine Patch Blocks from The Reproduction Nine Patch Block Swap. She's planning to make the Nine Patch with Hour Glass Blocks with the remaining 30 Nine Patch Blocks. That quilt will be 72" x 84". Layout pattern (see above) available at Little Quilts.
Use strip-piecing short cuts to make this Nine Patch quilt in a traditional Irish Chain style. Gray and white low volume fabrics give it a modern feel.
Nine Patch is a fun, quilt-inspired, intarsia cardigan. Deep in the pandemic, feeling the need for serotonin-inducing tiny bursts of color, Julie began playing around with little swatches of leftover Verb yarn. Inspired by a patchwork sweater she designed in the 90s, she began to create a new rendition. And in predictable Julie-fashion, one rendition led to three variations! (Julie is always brimming with creativity - the only thing standing in her way is the need to sleep!) The three variations Julie designed are shown above and are available as kits. You can choose to knit this sweater with elbow-length sleeves or as a vest - instructions for both are included. All kits include enough yarn to knit the version with elbow-length sleeves. The pattern begins as Cocoknits Method* with the creation of an upper back, shoulders, and fronts - but the sleeves are picked up and knitted down after the body is complete. This way you can decide if you want to continue with sleeves or finish the armholes with ribbing to make a vest. Once the body length is reached, the body stitches are held, then stitches are picked up around the neckline and along the fronts, and a hem is knit. This easy block uses just squares and rectangles to create a design that alternates light and dark fabrics for a delightful quilt. While the units can be made like a typical Nine Patch block, I've chosen to eliminate some seams by using rectangles in place of some of the squares.
Our Amish made Nine Patch Calico Quilt is full of surprising color, offset by spaces of heavily hand quilted neutral white squares. Gorgeous border, too!

Churn dash was the second and Shoofly the third. Framed Nine-patch was a few later. Shoofly is not made in the traditional way, rather with a float method using flipped corners.
Donna Church's relationship with one lovely nine-patch quilt embodies the beauty of fiber art, it’s history, and the feelings it evokes.
