For years, I've been interested in Penny Rugs. Their origin dates back to the Civil War era, when homemakers used wool scraps from old clothing, etc. to create mats or rugs. Using coins as templates, they created circles and stitched them with a blanket stitch to a background fabric. They weren't necessarily made as floor rugs, but more often decor coverings for beds, tables, and mantels. Recently, inspired by the blog site of Ashton Publications, I decided to try my hand at making a penny rug since it appears I will never find an antique one in my price range. Wool fabric is very expensive, so the search began to find affordable materials. Since this is raw-edge applique, the wool needs to be felted so that it doesn't ravel. The options are: Wool felt (different from craft felt) which sells for about $18 a yard in a limited color selection at Jo-Ann Fabric. I found my wool felt at Ruth's Stitchery in Colorado Springs in a bunch of yummy colors. Another option is wool that has been over-dyed and felted and is available on Etsy, and also at some quilt stores. This is expensive at about $3.00 for a piece 5" square; but, oh, it is so luscious and I can't resist it. A third option is to purchase new wool fabric at approximately $30 and up for a yard. Then, it is necessary to felt the wool yourself by washing it in very hot water and drying it in a hot dryer. And finally, another option is to find 100% wool garments at the thrift stores; deconstruct them and felt them yourself. I used wool from all of the above sources so that I could have a variety of colors, textures and patterns. This was a fun project; and was easy to accomplish using a #22 chenille needle and #5 Perle cotton for the embroidery, taking a couple of weeks working in the evenings. This is a small piece measuring just 12" x 20". Now, I'm thinking about another project using wool and embroidery; but not necessarily circular shapes. We'll see!!! Happy Easter Everyone! My Easter treat to you is a lesson about assembling a rug of self backed stacks. This is my favourite way to make rugs. And a very easy method for beginners. You can make a pleasing, useful mat. First arrange your stacks into a shape you like. Then turn them over. Join one stack at a time, with a whip stitch. Make two or three stitches in the same place picking up just the backing wool fabric. Glide and pass your needle inside the stack to attach another stack. Join all the penny stacks together forming a row. Repeat until you have all the rows assembled. Then take two rows and join them together in a sort of zig zag fashion. I do this on my lap. Again gliding the needle inside the stack to the next whip stitch position. Join this row, then another, and so on. (Ha! sew on...) When you're done joining the rows, your mat is assembled! I soaked my rug in cold water... Warning, if your fabric bleeds be very cautious when soaking or washing. Always use cold water and mild detergents. Here I will soak and dry the rug so that I can press it. I press sometimes and sometimes not, it depends on how I feel about the rug. (What do I think it needs) This step is entirely up to you, you do not have to soak and press. If you want to; follow this method, rinsing and squishing gently, if you need to wash your rug. I squished out most of the water and placed it on a fluffy towel. (Warning again, if your rug bleeds dye, use old towels!) Next add another towel on top and roll it up to remove even more moisture. Resting the rolled towels to pull out the moisture... press your hands along the roll to hasten this process and remove more moisture. You may want to change the towels once or twice. Remove the wet towels to the laundry. Let your roll rest while you watch the hummingbirds...... Can you count three? There is a fourth one, but he was too fast for the camera! Warm up your iron. Now press, with dry fluffy towels. One on top and one underneath. Afterward I left this rug on a dry towel in a warm spot, overnight, to dry completely. In the morning I gave it another press. It's a beauty! I have been known to take a completed rug and toss into the dye pot! Who knows, this one might become another colour! Done for now, on to the next one!

I LOVE all things Autumn and the colors used to make these Indian Summer “Whatever” Mats, just represent the Fall season to me. These are so beautiful and have quickly become a favorite! But here is what is so cool about these two designs ~ you can use any color you want!!! Have a yarn or fabric stash? Then "Use-It-Up" and make something totally unique! These squares and diamonds are made by weaving your own fabric from stunning heather wool yarn! In this packet you will learn how to weave similar fabric to make the squares and diamonds similar to what is shown in the pictures above. These Indian Summer “Whatever” Mats, measure approximately 9.25” x 9.25” (squares) and 9” x 9” (diamonds). The “Whatever” Mats are meant to be a smaller version of the “traditional” sized penny rugs. Because of their size, you can place them almost anywhere and they do not distract from “Whatever” is placed on top ~ under a candy dish, candle, flower pot, decorative figurine, picture, etc. I place them side by side on my long dinning table and still have plenty of room for other table items. Of course, you can always use wool or woolfelt to make these fabulous “Whatever” Mats too! Applique patterns/templates are full/actual size ~ no percentage scaling! ******* PLEASE READ ******** This is an e-pattern and not a paper pattern! This e-pattern is in pdf form, so if you don't already have Adobe Reader, you need to get it http://get.adobe.com/reader/ ~ hope you enjoy! The additional items shown in the pictures are for decoration only and not included in the sale of this e-pattern. This pattern is protected by copyright.
