Physical and Chemical Changes of Matters The change of matter is divided into "physical" and "chemical". Changes seen only in the external structure of matter are physical. In a chemical change, a change is observed in the identity of the substance, that is, in its internal structure. Physical Change It ıs the change that can be noticed through observation. The color or shape of the substance changes. Physical changes are collected in 8 main groups. 1. Breaking Example: breaking wood, breaking ice, breaking an egg 2. In the Science of Chalk, your students will explore the physical & chemical properties of chalk and its importance. This unique lesson includes how chalk is made, naturally and synthetically, its impact on society, with hands-on explorations, CER experiment & extension activity. The Science of Chalk takes a common and familiar substance and invites students to learn more about it, helping them see science in their daily lives. Intriguing lesson to get your students thinking and observing the world around them. Its a lesson that won't be "erased" from their memory anytime soon! Objective: Students will learn about a natural resource, chalk, that is used in synthetic products. Students will learn how chalk is formed, and the human-made products and uses for chalk. Chalk is more useful than most people know! How chalk has participated in building society and education is also discussed. Students have several activities: 2 explorations, a CER lab and an extension activity are all provided. Science Concepts: Physical and chemical properties; chemical reactions; acids and bases, pH; natural and synthetic materials Connections and Skills: Make connections between prior and new information, critical thinking through explorations, CER science method (scientific reasoning) Lesson and Teacher Tips: This lesson takes a common and familiar substance and invites students to learn more about it. It is assumed that students are already familiar with the ideas of physical and chemical properties, acids and bases, chemical reactions. This lesson works well for 2-3 days in class with opportunities for hands-on explorations and a CER experiment.
