Web editor Paul Adams ruined my morning by walking over to my desk to inform me that Ray Bradbury had died at age 91. The news was unpleasant, but I appreciated the face-to-face exchange rather than getting an email. Bradbury, a writer oft-gripped by the talons of nostalgia who disliked modern technology such as computers, deserved a meatspace delivery of the news of his demise.
Ray Bradbury, a master of science fiction and fantasy, captivated readers with his imaginative storytelling and vivid prose.

Bantam Spectra paperback comments by CR: The Martian Chronicles is a short story collection by Ray Bradbury concerning the settlement of Mars by successive expeditions from Earth and the eventual demise of the native Martians. The natives are humanoid and can read minds, this does adds an interesting twist to many of the stories after all they know what we are thinking so you better put that ray gun back in it's holster. Considering the facts that these stories were written in the late 1940s and the numerous reprints and editions of this title over the years speaks to the books enduring, and deserved, popularity. I do have a minor issue with this book: it is always cited as a "science fiction" short story collection. While it certainly contains numerous SF props - rockets - Martians - space flight - I would contend that there is sufficient reasons to consider it a fantasy. We are presented a Mars with a temperate climate, breathable air, liquid water, fish, birds and, those shape shifting, mind reading Martians. So in my oppinion the "science" is, well, preposterous, and the book should be considered a fantasy. That's one reviewers oppinion, not that it matters. This is a terrific collection and is highly recommended as either science fiction or fantasy.
