I recently became highly obsessed with the TV show The Borgias, so when it came time for me to make my monthly Thrifty Thursday purchase all I could think about were Italian Renaissance dresses. Just look at these dresses! They may not be 100% historically accurate, but it is impossible to deny that they are pieces of art. Can you see why I was inspired? I got one white sheet, a pillow case that I stole the trim from, an opulent bed skirt, four pieces of light brown fabric, and a pearl necklace from Goodwill. In total it came to $16. I started by doing some further research. I know quite a bit about English Renaissance dresses, but Italian? Stumped. The Borgias takes place in 1492, all my costuming books skip this period and move straight from Medieval into the 16th century. Even Janet Arnold's AMAZING books had nothing on this period. I wept and turned to the internet, which was absolutely zero help. Forums and forums of people arguing whether ladies wore corsets or not...where they laced the dresses, what fabric they used. Almost no one agreed with each other. So I decided to just make up my own mind based on paintings- and if it wasn't historically accurate...well I would learn for the next time. I pinned a bunch of paintings to my Pinterest board, but these were a few of my favorites. This dress is a dress from a bit later in the Renaissance, but it showed the lacing of the dress up the side which was supremely helpful. I decided to make a really weird corset that would simply give me the correct shape I needed, rather than being historically accurate. Why? Because I could find NO visual examples of an early Renaissance corset. It didn't make sense to me that the same corset they use for later in the period, when the waist drops, would be used in this period when the waist is so high. So I made this...thing. Half Tudor, half Regency...it is 100% inaccurate. But hey, it gave me the right shape. I made a chemise out of the white sheet and added gold trim on the neckline. Technically this would have been gold embroidery...but I didn't have time for that. I figured gold trim was a nice compromise. You wish your undies were as awesome as mine! So together- I needed lots of help getting dressed- it was no easy task. The dress tied up the side rather than lace. I tried adding hooks for lacing, but couldn't pull the bodice closed enough. So I tied it instead. The sleeves all tied on as well. My hair got SUPER messy during this dressing period. Note- do your hair AFTER you get dressed. Not before. Then I dragged my mother out into our park to take some pictures in the few spots that actually had green grass still. I made a gold cap for my hair, and added my hair extensions. While I have quite long, thick hair, I don't have THAT much hair. Oops...my sleeve broke. Shh. This project was fun. So much fun that I want to make several more dresses and just wear these all the time. Going to the grocery store, the library, to work- Italian Renaissance style. Thanks for reading! If you have any comments, suggestions for the next Thrifty Thursday, or information on ways I could be more historically accurate next time I make something from this period- please leave me a comment!

Renaissance dress inspired by the Ever After — a unique version of Cinderella starring Drew Barrymore. It has all features of a Renaissance dress: multiple layers, high waists, an outer skirt, and long and puffy sleeves. The top dress (the kirtle) is a tight bodice with a flowing skirt. It is decorated with lacing at the front. The sleeves are lush thanks to the folds. All over the dress, there is an ornamental braid that helps make the right silhouette and add elegance. Last, but not least — fabric pattern. Under the kirtle, there is a white shirt — an important part of the costume. Its details are visible in the neckline and sleeves > Top dress: Material — jacquard, trims. > Shirt: Material — cotton. The material we use for this dress is shown in the 6th picture, if you'd like to change the fabric, please don't hesitate to write us. The dress is made to order. ___________________________________________________________ ♥See all Renaissance dresses: https://etsy.me/3wQ7ETc ___________________________________________________________ =SHIPPING= We provide Standard airmail shipping by default, but another option is express shipping via UPS, please, contact us for details. =CUSTOM ORDERS= It is possible to recreate this costume with other materials and coloring (text us for details). Renaissance Fitted Dress "Renaissance Memories Cotton Renaissance costume dress with sleeves When you think about it, you can still see her, clear as day: her hair catching in the breeze as she walked along the castle walls. Occasionally she would catch your eye, a shy smile playing across her lips as she looked away, hurrying off. Sometimes she would come down to the gardens, just to sit near the willows and enjoy the quiet birdsong. You can’t remember the last time you saw her, though - was she just a dream? Or perhaps a distant memory… As with many of our most beautiful creations, we found inspiration for this stunning dress in history and then altered it slightly to create something flattering and unique. We have taken silhouettes and features from the late XV/ XVI centuries, picking and choosing different parts of various garments to create what has become our “Renaissance Memories” collection. Though this Renaissance dress isn’t strictly historical, it won’t look out of place at any medieval events, and is great for SCA, LARP, Renaissance Faires and more! This is an overdress, which means it is best paired with a chemise underneath. It features a fitted bodice, square neckline, side lacing, tailored sleeves, and a massive, gorgeously draped skirt. It features silhouettes and shapes that are undeniably feminine, and we have aimed to make the shoulders of this dress fitted and dainty, with a sculpted waistline a flowing skirt, complete with generous box pleats. We have created the front panel of the dress to have horizontal pleats, imitating the front lacing you would commonly find in gowns of this time period. We chose to move the lacing to the sides of the dress, however, to accommodate people of all shapes and sizes and to ensure it looks great on every body type. This dress looks amazing on any modern figure, and the side lacing ensures you get the best, most comfortable fit possible. The main part of the dress has short sleeves, finishing at the bicep. You can choose to wear the dress as-is, or also wear the matching velvet sleeves, made from a contrasting color. These sleeves do not tie on and are instead worn as if they are arm warmers, without any lacing. The sleeves are also close fitting, creating a beautiful silhouette with the rest of the dress. If you do not wish to wear the sleeves, your chemise will be visible, which is also a perfectly suitable way to wear this outfit. The majority of this dress is constructed from our premium cotton. It is a structured, strong fabric, giving this dress some much needed form, but it also drapes beautifully and creates a dramatic skirt that will flow when you walk. To give this stunning garment an extra touch of luxury, we have used velvet accents. Velvet has a beautiful texture, which feels lovely and also looks fantastic in photography. You will find three stripes of velvet along the bottom of the dress, as well as bordering the shoulders, down the bottom of the bodice. We have also finished the short sleeves with velvet and created separate tight sleeves made out of a slightly stretchier velvet, which close around your wrist with a few dainty buttons. The wide lacing on the sides of the dress is also in the same color as the velvet, to add some visual interest. There are a number of different types of characters who would wear this dress, and we feel that it is incredibly versatile - noblewomen, merchants, townspeople, princesses... it depends on your imaginations, really. We would love to know the kind of character you play if you end up wearing this dress! To check how to measure yourself please click here. Please contact us if you have any additional questions.
