Are you looking for a lesson that introduces what rocks and minerals are and how they are different? This lesson teaches just that! A rock is like the Snickers bar and a mineral is like the Hershey's bar. This is a hands-on, edible lesson I have used many times to introduce my rocks and minerals unit. With this lesson, students observe a Hershey's bar and a Snickers bar. They then discuss the similarities and differences between these two candies. Then they participate in a classroom discussion where they learn how this applies to rocks and minerals. Every single time I teach this lesson, my students LOVE it! They get really excited to learn more about rocks and minerals and they think I'm the coolest teacher ever. (Both of which are A-OK in my book!)
