Join me for today's Folio Flip Album Tutorial where I share how I created this cute Folio with Recollections card stock and Colorbox paper.
Good morning, Crafters! I have a sweet, summertime tutorial for you today! If you are trapped inside with the air conditioning roaring, then it's the perfect time to whip up this little cutie! My monthly mini showcases the Authentique Summertime Collection! This is the perfect collection for these hot, humid, end-of-summer days! This summer collection comes with six different sheets and 12 patterns, However, the collection has TWO sheets of cut-aparts, Summertime Five and Summertime Six. If you purchase the paper pad, you get four of each pattern. That is plenty of paper to make this mini album! This mini is 5" tall and 3 1/2" wide (similar to the Meadow Mini Album, shared HERE). There are three pages, with lots of fold-outs and flaps, plus TWO waterfall sections! Let's get started on the tutorial. Cut two pieces of medium weight chipboard to 5" x 3 1/2". Cut one piece of chipboard to 5" x 1". Trim dark blue cardstock to 7" x 10 1/4" and attach the chipboard pieces to the cardstock as shown above. Make sure to maintain a 1/8" gap between the spine piece and the cover pieces of chipboard. Trim the cardstock corners at an angle and attach double-sided adhesive to the tabs. Wrap the chipboard as shown. Gently fold the covers while scoring in the 1/8" gutter (or channel) between the spine and the covers. Trim decorative paper to fit over the center spine section. Do this BEFORE adding your hinge mechanism. DO NOT add paper to your inside covers until AFTER you add your hinge mechanism. Create a hinge mechanism from dark blue cardstock. Cut the cardstock to 4 1/4" x 4 1/2". (The 4 1/4" measurement is the height of the hinge.) Score on the longer side at: 1", 1 1/8", 1 3/8", 1 5/8", 2", 2 1/4", 2 1/2", 2 7/8", 3 1/8", 3 3/8", 3 1/2". This will make three hinges that are 1/4" all with a 3/8" space between hinges. Attach the hinge to the spine of the book. Line up the scored 1/8" "gutters" on your hinge to the gutters on your album. Gently burnish and fold all your score lines. Trim decorative paper to add to the inside of your covers. Trim three pieces of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and add one piece to each hinge. Glue these "base pages" to the left side of each hinge. (Don't worry. Your decorative papers will cover the other side of the hinge.) Create a waterfall section for the front cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous page. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the first base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap, then the right flap to finish the first base page. Turn the page and work on the BACK of the first base page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 5/8" x 3 1/8" and score on the bottom at 1/4" from the edge. Round the top corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the bottom edge of the BACK of the first base page. Add a pocket to the bottom of the second base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flip the second base page over and work on the BACK. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 5 1/2" and score on the long side at 2" and 5 1/4" from the left edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the second base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the second base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the right flap, then the accordion fold the left flap to finish the second base page Add a pocket to the bottom of the THIRD base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flop the page and work on the BACK of the last page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the third base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the flap to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap to finish the last base page. Create a waterfall section for the inside back cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Now your mini book is ready to decorate! I trimmed a piece of white, adhesive-back canvas to cover the spine of my book. Then, I added the yellow and white dotted paper to the front and back covers. I kept the cover simple by adding a word grid sticker and a bit of pretty ribbon. (The sticker is VERY OLD and I have no idea where it's from!) I double-matted the sticker and added it to a bit of scrap chipboard before gluing it to the cover. I found the cute crab button in my stash and thought he would like to end his days decorating the bow! I used a banner die to cut out the spine decor. I used a Tim Holtz brad to dangle some charms from the spine. (I have a bin of charms and a bin of beads, most of which have been with me since the early 1990's! I add to them from time to time, so I really don't remember where these particular items came from!) I added the fun Summertime papers to the inside sections of my book, and then just added a few stickers and other bits and bobs to decorate each page. The Summertime cut-aparts are the perfect size for my pages... and to fit into the pockets! I have no idea how long I've had some of these stickers! I almost never reach for stickers, but I am happy I still had these in my stash as they worked perfectly for this little book! I found clear stickers, and 3-D sticker, and word art...just a treasure trove! With TWO waterfall features, there is a lot of space for photos and journaling! If you want to see each page, watch my little walk-through video below! I hope you are inspired to beat the heat and make a little end-of-summer mini! Thanks for joining me today! Introducing 3D Vignette Mini Album Collection by Becca Feeken! I am so excited to be part of this NEW release by Amazing Paper Grace/Spellbinders! Becca so generously sent me a packet of dies to work up a mini album! Her instructions were to "use as many dies as you can, but be true to your own style"! How could I refuse that?!! To view the Amazing Paper Grace Team Blog Hop featuring the 3D Vignette Mini Album Collection, please click HERE. I created a 6 1/2" x 6" x 1 5/8" mini album using the lovely Graphic 45 Dreamland Collection. I know, the size is a little strange, but I needed to accommodate the dies, as I will explain below. {smile} But, the beauty of creating your own mini albums from scratch is that you can make them any size you wish! No one can tell you that your book size is "wrong"! I decorated the cover with this beautiful Grand Crested Tower die, cut from dark blue cardstock. I then layered the Double Halo Oval, cut from sliver glitter paper. The Double Halo Oval comes with a coordinating plain oval die (so handy!) which I used to cut out the image from the G45 paper. You have no idea how hard it is to find a matching oval die! Every time I cut out a decorative oval, I can never find a plain oval die to match! I love that the Double Halo Oval comes WITH the matching oval! That is attention to detail! I added a few of the Dreamland chipboard shapes and topped them with silver pearls. I looked through my ribbon stash and found this beautiful satin/sheer ribbon in the perfect shade of blue! (See, it is NOT hoarding, it is inventory for future projects!) I created the mini album to use the Universal Accordion Fold Spine, which means I have four pages (eight sides). Using this die to make the hinges was so EASY! My only adjustment from my "normal" way of making a mini was to make sure I have the spine piece cut to the correct size! I found the die cut hinges to be very sturdy and easy to add my pages. I have a little tutorial below to explain how I used the dies in place of my normal hinge pieces. I started out as I normally do, but cutting medium weight chipboard to size. I cut two pieces to 6 1/2" x 6 and one piece to 6 1/2" x 1 5/8". I wrapped the chipboard with dark blue cardstock, just as I normally do. (The cardstock needs to be 8 1/2" x 15 7/8".) I cut the Universal Accordion Fold Spine from dark blue cardstock using my crank die cut machine. (I use a Big Shot Plus.) For detailed instructions on folding the spine piece to make your hinges, view THIS TUTORIAL. It is SO EASY to fold and assemble! You will notice that the spine and hinge piece is shorter than my actual spine. The die cut piece is slightly taller than 5" while my spine is 6 1/2" tall. That is NOT an issue! It is perfectly fine to have that discrepancy! (The linked video shows you how to trim the die cut piece for a mini that is SHORTER than 5" as well! I attached a piece of dark blue cardstock (6 3/8" x 3 1/2") over my chipboard spine to reinforce the gutters. I then attached a piece of decorative paper over the spine area. I then attached the die cut spine and hinge mechanism to the spine of the mini album, making sure to line it up appropriately. I then assembled my mini album as always! Each of the inside pages is 6" x 5 1/2". I simply cut eight pieces of dark blue cardstock, and then attached one piece to the front of each hinge and one piece to the back, sandwiching the hinges in between. To decorate the spine of my album, I cut one of the decorative pieces from Decorative Edges and Spines out of ivory cardstock and attached it to the spine. I added a chipboard moon from the Dreamland Collection. Since my spine is taller than the spine cover die, I only used one of the decorative inserts. The spine cover is meant for albums that are approximately 4" tall, where my book is 6 1/2" tall. This is a photo of the Inside Front Cover and Page One. I created a pocket for the inside front cover, adding the same decorative spine insert as decor for the pocket! I cut the decorative panel from ivory cardstock, then matted it with dark blue cardstock. I added a square tag and a 6" x 4" journaling card to the pocket. The journaling card opens for space for photos or more journaling. I cut the large decorative oval from the Double Halo Oval set out of dark blue cardstock. I used the matching plain oval to cut a photo mat from ivory cardstock. The little silver swirl is from the Grand Crested Tower set, which I cut from silver glitter cardstock. Once I added the moon sticker, the swirl looks like clouds! Pages Two and Three. I used the Woven Trellis Side Pocket to create a pretty pocket on Page Two. I repeated the oval on Page Three, but flipped the colors. Another ivory square tag makes a nice photo mat and slips easily into the corner pocket. I added some gems to the pocket, bu they are hard to see in the photo. Pages Four and Five. I used the ovals from the Grand Crested Tower and the Double Halo Oval to cut photo mats from ivory cardstock. To create a jornaling spot for Page Five, I matted one of the Dreamland Ephemera and Journaling Cards. The accent piece from the Double Halo Oval set is perfect for making decorative corners on the pages! I cut these from the silver glitter cardstock. Pages Six and Seven. More pockets! I used the second decorative spine piece in the Decorative Edges and Spines set to cut a see through window in the pocket. A sticker adds just the right amount of decor! I created another 6" x 4" journaling card/photo mat for the pocket. Another pocket created with the Woven Trellis Side Pocket. I love how great the square tags work for this project! Page Eight and Inside Back Cover. I used the small die from the Double Halo Oval set to create a decor element on both pages. I cut the element for Page Eight from dark blue cardstock and attached it over an ephemera card. I cut the second oval from silver glitter cardstock and glued it to a chipboard shape to make a closure for the waterfall pages. There is a magnet to keep the waterfall closed. I created seven waterfall pages, each 3" x 4", the perfect size for the smaller ephemera cards! Some of the pages have decorative paper, some have plain cardstock, and some have the ephemera journaling cards. Perfect for photos and journaling! There is a cute journaling sticker hiding under the last page! I hope you enjoyed this project! I had such fun making it! I also created a matching card. To see that blog post, click HERE. Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. So pleased you came for a visit. I am here to show you what I have created with Kerry-Jean Watson's awesome Sherlock Book Kit. This fabulous Kit is available from Meg's Garden as either a fully printed version or a digital download that you can print for yourself. HERE is the link to see the video of the Book Kit. I am basically a card maker and I was in need of a Crafting Diary to keep track of Birthdays and Anniversaries, etc. and also Design Team Deadlines, and so that is what I decided to make with my Kit. Yes, I do have all that information on my computer, but there is nothing like having it all on hand in a pretty book is there?? For the front cover I did some stamping and stenciling and splashed a little paint around as well before adding the embellies. Most of the embellishments you can see came from Meg's Garden. You can purchase some fantastic 'bundles' that contain beads, ribbons, metal embellies ... everything you could possibly need to beautifully embellish your Kit, and they come in an assortment of colours too!! The film strip frame came from my stash and the photos inside it are actually photos of some of my past projects for Meg's Garden. The quote was found on the net. I wanted to incorporate some craft quotes into this book so you will see the odd one or two scattered around on different pages. The tabs you can see peeking out from the side of the book are part of the Kit. I simply wrote the months on by hand and then glued them to the edge of the journal pages. The book measures 5.75" x 7.75" and all the pages were distressed and inked with Gathered Twigs Distress Ink and then glued to sheets of Kraft Cardstock. Punched some holes with my Crop-adile and bound it together with seam binding. The binding was also coloured with Distress Ink in Gathered Twigs and Walnut Stain. Here's a closie of the charms ... ... and another of the quote and the flower cluster. I wanted this book to be more than just a Diary. I also want to use it as an ideas journal so I made a couple of small booklets and some tags in order to record things like interesting sketches, color palettes and great techniques. Making the booklet was very simple. I just cut some kraft cardstock and some plain sheets of paper to the size I wanted, folded them in half and then simply punched two holes in the crease and pulled some twine through and tied it with a bow. I then covered the front of each booklet with some of the paper and used a fancy paper clip to keep them closed. Following are some shots of the embellished pages or you can just go straight down to the end of this post for a walk through video which was made by Kerry-Jean Watson the creator of this awesome Kit. I don't make videos as I don't have the equipment and I am so pleased that Kerry-Jean offered to do one for me. Thank you KJ ... you rock!! ... and this is the back of the book. The gorgeous stains you can see are actually on the paper itself. The only changes I made here was to distress and ink the edges ... Looooovee those stains!! Here is the walk-through video!! I do hope you like my little Diary and that I have inspired you to get one for yourself!! Why not pop over to the Meg's Garden Blog and see what my Teamies created with this awesome Kit. You will be amazed by the variety!! HERE is the link to the blog and HERE is the link to the Shop!
