Perhaps the single best piece of Silhouette advice is to always do a test cut, yet the Silhouette advice most likely to be ignored is performing a test cut! Though it may seem like an unnecessary step, it's actually very important! Here's how to do it the right way so you'll save time, money, and material. Select Silhouette Studio Cut Settings Open Silhouette Studio and go to the Send Panel. Select a material that most closely describes that material you are test cutting. I'm test cutting Siser Easyweed Heat Transfer Vinyl so the material selection I chose was Heat Transfer, Smooth. If you're completely unsure of where to start with cut settings, check out this blog post about how to estimate cut settings for materials not in the material list. Load Silhouette Cutting Mat with Material Whether you are testing on cardstock or vinyl or any other material, perform a test cut on a scrap of the exact material you will be using for your project. Secure it anywhere on your mat - it doesn't need to be in the top left corner. Then, load the cutting mat into the machine. Arrange Blade over Material Use the arrow keys on the machine... or the arrow keys in the Send panel... ... to move the carriage over the material on your cutting mat and set the test cut location. Test Cut with Silhouette CAMEO 4 Click the Test button in Silhouette Studio. The Silhouette CAMEO 4 will then perform a test cut using the cut settings of the material you selected. The shape of the test cut is a triangle surrounded by a square. Check Results When the machine is done, unload the mat and check the results. With vinyl, either HTV or adhesive vinyl, use a weeding tool to remove just the outer square shape. You are checking to see that only the square peels off and that the triangle stays down. If the square vinyl cut comes up easily, this is considered a good cut! If you cannot remove the vinyl square cut or it is difficult to remove, then an increase to the blade force and/or blade depth is necessary. With vinyl, you are also checking to see that the blade did not cut through the backing of the vinyl. Remove the scrap vinyl from the mat to check that the blade did not cut all the way through. If it did, then a decrease in force and/or blade depth is necessary. For cardstock, use your fingers or a tool to lift the test cut shapes off the mat to see if the blade cut all the way through the cardstock. If it did, then this is a good cut! If not, then an increase to the force and or blade depth is necessary. Make Adjustments Return the scrap material to the mat, provided there is enough room on the scrap to make another test cut, otherwise put a new scrap material piece on mat. Then, like before, arrange the cutting blade carriage over a different spot on the scrap material. Return to the Send panel in Silhouette Studio to make adjustments to the force and/or blade depth. A good rule of thumb is to always make adjustments to the force first before making adjustments to the blade depth. For example, if the test cut wasn't deep enough, increase the force settings but keep the blade depth the same. Then, perform another test cut (click the Test button) and check to see how that worked. If you reach the highest force settings (33) and that is still not cutting deep enough, then increase the blade depth by 1 and decrease the force setting to 0 and then resume test cutting. Find the Sweet Spot Don't cut deeper than you have to. Cutting too deep will dull the blade faster and reduce the life of and/or damage your cutting mat. The ideal cut settings for any material is deep enough to achieve the desired cut without it being overkill! Repeat these steps as necessary until you reach the desired cut settings. Cut and Finish Your Project Once your test cut produces the cut you want, go back to Silhouette Studio to import your design. The beach designs and fonts for these monogrammed burlap bags comes from the June Fonts and SVG Design Bundle from So Fontsy. Size the design appropriately for your project and load your cutting mat with an appropriately sized piece of material. If you're using HTV, don't forget to mirror the design. Then, in the Send panel, keep the settings exactly as they were for the perfect test cut, then just hit Send! Even with a successful test cut on vinyl, it's still a good idea to perform a "test weed" on part of design while it's still loaded in the machine - just in case you did have to make cut setting adjustments and cut again. Then, assemble your project - like pressing these cut and weeded HTV monograms onto burlap bags. The Cricut Mini Easy Press is perfect for small HTV projects like these. Press using medium heat for about 10-15 seconds with medium pressure. Then, remove the HTV carrier sheet. You'll find that test cutting gets faster as you become more experienced with your Silhouette and specific materials. You can also save custom material cut settings to use in the future! Understanding how kerning works with text and fonts in Silhouette Studio.
If you are looking for a new heat press they are finally here! Long gone are the okay-ish colors that clash with your craft room. You can now get what I like to refer to them as a "pretty heat press" - that matches not only your craft room but your Silhouette CAMEO machine. The new 15 x 15" heat presses are exclusively available at Swing Design and come in four colors: white, pink, teal, and coral. When I got my first heat press off Amazon about 5 years ago, I took a chance on one of the only entry-level presses available. It was $269 for a yellow and black press with no customer support and no option for financing. (It worked great and served me for about four years before I donated it to another crafter to make room for a few other heat presses..in prettier colors and various sizes.) Craft and hobby heat presses have come a long way since then. The temperature range on the Swing heat press allows the press to heat up to 480 degrees - well over what's needed for HTV, rhinestones, printable heat transfer, and sublimation. These presses also use a different type of heat system which provides even edge to edge even heat. The pink and teal heat presses match the pink and teal Silhouette CAMEO 3 machines - certainly not a necessity, but definitely a nice option to have. Craft Heat Press Comparison The 15 x 15" heat presses cost $299.99 and there's an option for 0% financing as well. You can also get it as part of a bundle with a pink, white, or black CAMEO 4 or a 15" CAMEO Plus. All of the pretty Swing heat presses include the teflon sheet so you can plug it in and start pressing immediately. For a good quality entry-level heat press that’s nice to look at and works well with even heat and high enough temperatures for sublimation this is definitely a good option especially if you're on a budget. If you've been heat press shopping you know it's a challenge to find a heat press under $300. The only one that comes close in price is the pink Hotronix Craft Press, but it's the smaller 9 x 12" size and the price is still higher at $310. I have the 9x12" pink heat press and love it because of the smaller footprint and the ability to transport it - but it's not ideal for larger-size designs. Other 15 x 15 heat presses start in the mid $300s and go up from there. Here's a side by side comparison of popular features in entry level, hobby 15x15" manual open clam shell style presses. If you're ever looking for commercial and personal use cut files and free SVGs and fonts...I'm of course going to recommend So Fontsy. As many of you know along with Silhouette School, Silhouette U, and the Ultimate Silhouette Guide ebook shop - I am also one of the owners of So Fontsy. We could not be more excited to have just re-launched So Fontsy capping off a nearly two year completely custom rebuild - bringing new features and a better overall experience for you and our awesome designers. If you’re not familiar with So Fontsy we are a marketplace style SVG and font ecommerce website offering cut files and fonts specifically for die cut crafters - all 100% commercial and personal use. Along with SVGs and fonts we also have craft mockups, sublimation prints, applique and machine embroidery designs, clipart and templates. Today I thought I'd share 10 tricks, new features, and secrets about So Fontsy....which we put in place based on feedback from you! And more features are coming soon! 1. Print Off Your Order All So Fontsy users are now able to log into their accounts and print out a copy of their order. Go to the Orders section, select an order number, then click "Print Order". This will let you save the order as a PDF which you can print off. This makes it easy to see exactly which design do you have and which you’ve already purchased. 2. Don't Re-Buy the Same Fonts and SVGs Don’t worry about buying designs you already have...or buying more than one at a time. We won't let you add more than one of the same product to your cart. And if you already have it, we won't let you buy it again. When you’re hovering over a product and it does not say 'Add to cart' but instead says 'Download' that means you've already purchased it. This works for individual products and bundles. The hover trick won't work for designs that you got with the purchase of a bundle. But I have a trick for that too.... 3. So Fontsy Bundles Logs It's now easier than ever to organize your SVG and Font Bundles from So Fontsy! All of our font and design bundles include a free printable PDF bundle product sheet. This makes it super easy and convenient to reference and remember which commercial use svg designs and commercial use fonts you own! The downloadable and printable PDF will download with the bundle. 4. Lifetime Access and Unlimited Downloads Also So Fontsy purchases are stored in your Account so you have lifetime access. This means you don't need to worry about downloading everything immediately. You can also save storage space on your computer hard drive by letting us store your purchases for you! Don't worry you get unlimited downloads so if you do download a product then want to delete it off your computer, you can always come back and download it again. 5. Download EXACTLY What You Want When You Want it There are several ways to download your purchases now giving you lots of flexibility depending on your immediate crafting needs and storage preferences. From the Orders area you can click an Order and either Download All (Red) to download everything in that specific order. Or you can select individual products to download (Black). Or you can download single products by clicking the Download button next to the product (Blue). If you purchased a bundle because it was a deal you just couldn't pass up, but don't need everything right now? From either the Orders or Downloads area, you can opt to either download the entire bundle or you can select individual products from the bundle to download. From the Downloads area of your Account find the bundle and click Download Bundle to download the entire bundle. Or...Click the + sign to see the individual designs, fonts, and mockups in the bundle. Click "Download". 6. Easily Identify Your Commercial Use SVG Designs and Fonts All So Fontsy products - including SVG designs, fonts, mocks ups, and machine embroidery designs include the free commercial use license. This means you can use our digital products and designs to make finished goods to sell, gift or keep for yourself. But how do you know which of the SVGs and fonts that you own are commercial use? At So Fontsy we now add "So Fontsy" to the beginning of every zip file download from your So Fontsy account making it easy to identify where you got the file and instantly identifiable as commercial use! **The only bummer is this change could not be retroactively applied to zip files/products that were originally uploaded by our vendors to the site prior to June 1, 2020. 7. New Categories and New Products...and Newly Organized So Fontsy has added a bunch of new categories including laser cut files for Glowforge and Epilog, free Unisub sublimation templates, and machine embroidery and appliqué design. You'll also find popular and trending themes under the new Trending menu and current and upcoming themes will always rotate based on what's trending. We'll also keep the sub menus under the Seasonal Menu updated! 8. Better Search | Easier to Find The Best SVGs and Fonts So Fontsy search bar has also been greatly improved. The new search will now be able to not only pull up results based on your keywords, but you can then filter those results too. Use the sub menus to filter by vendor, price, and product type and narrow your results. This is helpful if you have a favorite designer or two! A search has also been added to the Downloads and Order area of the Account section so you can search for products you already own. You can then sort your purchases so find those you have yet to download, etc. 9. Search Within a Designer Shop You can also go directly to your favorite designer shop and search within the shop. This way, if you know that you like a certain designer, you can go directly to the shop and search for things by keyword such as Farmhouse and only those Christmas designs from that shop will appear in your search results. Some designers have also set up categories in their shops. This gives you quick access to all of that designers' products that fall into that category. For example clicking "Monograms" on this shop's menu bar brings up five results. 10. Search the So Fontsy Card Redemption Section If you have a Card Redemption code you can use it to redeem free designs from the Card Redemption section. But with more than 1400 products it can be challenging and time consuming to find what you're looking for. The trick here is to add a keyword to the main search bar on the So Fontsy website ... ...then filter the results by Collection selecting Card Redemption as the section Finally, and as always So Fontsy offers a lot of limited time deals including weekly free SVG designs and limited time design bundles. To ensure you don't miss any be sure you are on our insider email list! We'll send you deal alerts, exclusive coupons, and freebies directly to your inbox...all you have to do is tell us where to send it. Have you ever wondered how to get the popular warped text effect in Silhouette Studio? This retro look is all the rage right now so read on for the step by step details on how to make retro wavy text in Silhouette Studio. How to Create Text Boxes in Silhouette Studio Open up Silhouette Studio and type out the text. You'll want to make each line of text a separate text box. In the Text Style box choose your font. I'm using the JT Buble Flowr font from So Fontsy. Remember, to add new fonts to Silhouette Studio, the font will need to be downloaded and installed on your computer, and Silhouette Studio re-started for fonts to show up in the Text Style panel. Once you'e picked your font, size each line of text and use the align tool to justify it how you want. Filling Text and Designs with Color in Silhouette Studio Then to get a better visual of the finished design, you can fill the text with colors using the Fill Color tool. I also prefer to change the line color to transparent. How to Make Wavy Text in Silhouette Studio Now you're ready to warp the text. Select all three text boxes and click the Warp tool from the right side menu. Select the option to "Warp Selected Shapes." Use your mouse to grab the internal anchors and start moving them up and down to get the retro wavy look. Change each of the four internal anchors dragging the two on the left up and the two on the right down. The further you move them the more dramatic the wavy text will be. Once you're happy with the wavy-ness of the design, click "Release Warp." At this point your text is no longer text, but instead a path or shape. Each letter has been ungrouped so select all of the same-color letters and group them all together. Now you can size your design. Since this was going on a baby bodysuit, I size it down to about 4" wide. Mirror the image to cut on HTV and then send each color to cut. Weed and press each layer separately. You're all set with an adorable retro wavy text! Note: This post may contain affiliate links. By clicking on them and purchasing products through my links, I receive a small commission. Kara Walker is an amazing artist, unfortunately, not very appropriate for Middle School students. My colleague and I have wanted to try a K. Walker project for some time but were always too scarred. We decided to show some examples of Bansky and one 2 PG rated Kara Walker projects. Students had to express a point of view relating to a social issue (They chose from a PG list of social issues, some of the heavy ones were edited out). They were only allowed to use silhouette. We also discussed classical composition strategies leading up to this project. Students had to generate their own imagery although the last painting is done from the child's head. These were painted on watercolor paper with flat tempera paint. Environmental destruction Video game violence homelessness Racism

Which is the best printer for Silhouette CAMEO? It all depends on what you want to print and what you want to apply the print to!
Silhouette School launches live web based tutoring.
The Silhouette Portrait 3 is here and available now available for order and immediate shipping as just the machine and Silhouette Portrait 3 bundles. It's the first new Silhouette machine since the launch of the 15" Silhouette CAMEO Plus in January 2020...but it's NOT expected to be the last of the year. The third edition new Silhouette Portrait, retailing at $199.99, has a few updates from the previous model of the "mini CAMEO" so read on for the updates to the new Portrait model and a first look...plus info on the new Silhouette mobile app! Silhouette Portrait 3 The Silhouette Portrait is a smaller model of the Silhouette CAMEO 4 making it perfect for smaller craft spaces and those crafters who need a machine that's easy and light (just 3.5 lbs!) for on-the-go crafting anywhere from a craft show to a camper! The best part is Silhouette Portrait uses the same Silhouette Studio software as the larger Silhouette CAMEO machines and has the same functionality including Print and Cut, Pixscan, sketching, and of course cutting - all just on an 8" wide scale. It can also cut with a mat up to 12" or without a cutting mat up to 60' (feet) long. (And how perfect is it with the mini 9x12" pink heat press!! ) Silhouette Portrait 3 vs Silhouette Portrait 2 The biggest update to the Silhouette Portrait 3 from the earlier model Portrait 2 is the new tool carriage and therefore use of the new AutoBlade - the same one used in the CAMEO 4. The Portrait 3 is still a single-carriage cutting machine, but the new model of the 8" cutting machine has the same tool carriage as the left side tool carriage of the CAMEO 4. That means the Portrait 3 will use all the same tools and tool adapters that are used in the CAMEO 4's left carriage. This would include the Autoblade (second edition), the 2mm Kraft Blade, Sketch Pens, Deep Cut Blade, Premium Blade, and Ratchet Blade. However, one important thing to keep in mind is out of the box the Silhouette Portrait 3 ONLY comes with the blue adapter for sketch pens. All other adapters to use the Deep Cut Blade, Premium Blade, and Ratchet Blade would need to be purchased separately which is a change from the Silhouette CAMEO 4 and CAMEO 4 Plus which come with the tool adapters. But there's some good news..because Swing Design has put together several Portrait 3 bundles that include the extra adapters and the extra tools! The change in the tool carriage also means the Portrait 2 now has single tap reset with the Autoblade and automatic tool detection. It's worth pointing out the 8" Silhouette Portrait 3 does not have a high force tool carriage and therefore can not take the Rotary Blade, 3mm Kraft Blade or Punch tool. There are some other minor cosmetic differences between the Portrait 2 and Portrait 3 but they will be almost unnoticeable and most likely not worth an upgrade for an existing Portrait 2 owner...but for everyone else - including Portrait 1 and Silhouette CAMEO owners - you may really find benefit in the new Portrait 3. Want to see it up close, check out my Live Silhouette Portrait 3 Unboxing. Silhouette Portrait 3 vs Silhouette Portrait 1 If you are an original Silhouette Portrait owner, the Silhouette Portrait 3 offers quite a few update including: Bluetooth Capability Mobile App Connectivity Ability to use the Autoblade (2) Auto Tool Detection Single Tap Autoblade 2mm Clearance (thicker materials) Matless/Pop Out Cutting for unlined materials One thing to keep in mind is you can only use the older model Silhouette tools (ratchet blade, fabric blade, Deep Cut, Premium) in the Portrait 3 with an adapter. The exception would be the Silhouette Sketch Pens. Only the new sketch pens with the black case + blue adapter (the only adapter included) will work in the Portrait 3. Silhouette Portrait 3 vs CAMEO 4/CAMEO 3/CAMEO 2/CAMEO 1 Silhouette CAMEO 4 users (and those who own older model Silhouette CAMEOs including the CAMEO 3, 2, and 1) may also find added benefit in adding the smaller Portrait to their machine fleet. Silhouette Portrait 3 vs Cricut Joy Finally, looking outside the Silhouette family, how does the Silhouette Portrait 3 compare to the Cricut Joy? Both are wifi-enabled mini cutting machines that can cut without a mat. But how do the Cricut Joy vs Silhouette Portrait 3 stack up on features? Silhouette Portrait 3 Set Up and Getting Started To run the Silhouette Portrait 3 you must update your software to Silhouette Studio V4.4.235 or higher. This software version will also run all other Silhouette cutting machines. The Silhouette Portrait 3 can also be used with the new Silhouette mobile app, Silhouette Go, which was released in beta today.
