A copy of the Myles Standish punch bowl made by Gorham in the period immediately before WW2 when date marks were not in use. Gorham and other contemporary makers' Standish bowls were (and are) very popular additions to the Thanksgiving table and are mentioned in the poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes... Twas on a dreary winters eve, the night was closing, dim, When brave Miles Standish took the bowl, and filled it to the brim; The little Captain stood and stirred the posset with his sword, And all his sturdy men-at-arms were ranged about the board. I would think this is a smaller copy - I don't think you could get much punch out of this or stir it with a sword! I have struggled to understand what makes a bowl a "Standish" as as far as I can ascertain the original Standish bowl has not been preserved. But as far as I can ascertain it should have fluted sides and a low foot.
