Resource Extension Activities: Short Vowel Picture Card Sort: Choose which picture cards students are sorting and the sorting mat they are using. Students take the picture cards given and sort the cards under the correct sorting box. This activity can be done in a large or small group setting; partner activity; or center. They take turns turning two cards over to see if the word card and picture matches. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. Word Game: Children place cards face down and take turns drawing a card. If student can read the word, they keep it, if they cannot they must put it back. They must read all their cards, the person who has the most cards wins. Memory Game: Make two sets of the word cards and children place the cards face down in rows. They take turns turning two cards over to see if they have matched the same words. If it does, they keep both cards, if not they turn the cards back over and the next child has a turn. The person who has the most matches wins the game. Could be used in center Word Works. Sorting is an essential skill that students need to learn in their early education years. With this set of sorting mats, students can sort 16 different behaviors by good choice and bad choice. Make sorting into categories fun with these category sorting mats! This category sorting activity is used to target categorization skills both receptively and expressively. There are 10 different category mats and 60 different item cards. Category mats and category cards can be printed and laminated. Place hook and loop dots on the back of each category card and within the boxes on the category mats. Students can easily place these cards onto the mats when sorting. You can store the cards on each mat for an easy grab-and-go activity. These mats can be used to target both expressive and receptive language skills. You can ask students to “find a farm animal” from an array of choices. You can also have all the items out for selected categories, and have your students sort them onto the mats. After the items are placed, you can focus on expressive language skills by having the student state the category the item is in. For example, the student would say "A cow is a farm animal." There is also a visual sentence mat to assist students who need visual supports to create sentences.
