Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor)
Flight - Miniprint, Limited Edition Linocut A small study for a larger work - It should have been two swifts but I got carried away with the tails so veering towards the swallow... (swifts have much stubbier forked tails) - This is why study's are important as you can't go back once you've made a cut in the printing plate! I'm in no way going to pretend these are 'naturalistic'. Dark subjects are difficult to capture in monochrome so I've tried to get a sense of texture and movement by approaching this piece in a more illustrative way (including the the little air currents at the wing tips). I love Japanese woodcuts and there is a touch of these about this work with it's graphic elements. A charming little work hand carved in the studio and printed on my polymetaal press on acid free conservation paper print size - 13cm x 9.5cm paper size - 20x20cm approx This is part of my collection of mini prints - small and affordable but with the same level of detail and quality as the larger works. Framing options Print only - prints are dispatched wrapped in acid free tissue paper in a ribbon tied presentation folder titled with the prints name and edition number, signed by the artist. Mounted Prints - cut to fit standard frame sizes for you to frame at home, acid free conservation mountboard with strong backing board to prevent warping. Mountboard colour – Oyster. Framed –Oyster Mountboard and set in a wooden black frame with crystal Acryclic glazing. Acrylic glazing is rapidly beginning to take over from traditional glass due to its superb clarity and lightweight nature making it simpler to hang and move without fear of breakage.
Paloma Faith's Birds Tattoo - Image via Pinterest Bird tattoos have been popular for years. They were originated, as most tattoos seem to have been, by sailors. They got swallow tattoos to symbolise how many nautical miles they had travelled; one swallow meant 5,000 miles, two swallows 10,000 etc. Image via Pinterest Image via sailorjunkers.com Nowadays there has been a resurgence in the popularity of swallow tattoos, especially the vintage Sailor Jerry's kind. Image via We Heart It Image via We Heart It I wonder if these girls know the meaning behind these designs or of they just got them because they look 'retro.' Even though these bird tattoos are growing in popularity, the most common type still seems to be the small flock design below. Image via Pinterest Like most tattoo trends, this style has been grossly overused. The problem with this style, apart from the fact that every girl who wants to show she's a 'free spirit' gets it etched on herself, is that they more often than not end up looking like blurred blobs. Image via Pinterest There are, however some lovely and, more importantly, original bird tattoos out there. Here are a few of my favourites. The Swallow-tailed Kites have returned from migration here on Sanibel Island, FL. These beautiful birds winter mainly in South America and return to the Southeast U.S. to breed. Note the interesting pattern on the topside of the wing. We lucked out and had just pulled into a parking lot and saw 3 kites overhead. They did lots of calling and diving at one another. Swallow-taild Kites catch insects in the air and may pluck lizards from trees. They nest in woodlands and forested wetlands and build nests in trees. What a show we had.
The Swallow also represents love, care and affection towards family and friends, showing the loyalty of the person always returning to them.
