From the outset, you must understand that Boston, Massachusetts, was more than just a backdrop to our tale—it was an unwitting conspirator. The Civil War comes alive as never before in this extraordinary collection of colorized photographs from the era. Not only does it feature portraits of famous leaders and ordinary soldiers but also vignettes of American life during the conflict: scenes from urban and plantation life; destroyed cities; contested battlefields. Here, TIME commissioned Sanna Dullaway, a photo editor based in Sweden, to colorize some of the most iconic images of the Civil War. The end result, which can take up to three hours to achieve per picture, offers a novel and contemporary perspective to history. 1. Allan Pinkerton, President Lincoln, and Maj. Gen. John A. Lewis Thornton Powell (also known as Lewis Paine or Payne) was one of the people rounded up for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 14th 1865. This is effectively an early police mugshot. He was subsequently executed for his involvement in the conspiracy. I think it is an incredible photo, and so strange that it looks so comtemporary - it could almost come out of a modern fashion magazine for men. www.click2history.com/abraham_lincoln/abraham_lincoln_ch1...
