They will be testing random objects such as paper clips, toothpicks, marbles, string, etc. to determine whether they float or sink. Oobleck has properties, unlike most substances we usually encounter. Click Below to check out this activity in its grade-level-appropriate version! Kindergarten - 2nd Grade Version 3-5th Grade Version 6-8th Grade Version Making Icecream This activity is perfect for warmer weather!! If we take a mixture of cream and sugar and place it in the freezer it will get hard and become solid after, maybe, an hour. We can also hand mix it with an ice-salt mixture that will speed up the freezing process. By putting salt with the ice, the freezing point will move lower. This is a colligative property called “freezing point depression” ..... If you'd like to learn how to make your own ice cream in a bag, click here for Step-by-Step Instructions! Levitating Ping Pong Ball STEM Activity Challenge Students will work in groups to discover the phenomenon that occurs when a ping pong ball is placed above a straw and air is blown through the straw. Most people would expect the ping-pong ball to fly up and off to the side—but it doesn't. Due to Bernoulli's Principle, the ball will hover in the air above the straw. This project can end with a demonstration using a shop-vac or hairdryer with a ping-pong ball that will produce the same interesting results. Student portfolios can help teachers, students, parents, and administrators recognize the value of a STEM program, and they can be a tool for identifying areas of challenge and growth beyond the subjects that are traditionally graded. As your students maintain their own portfolios, they’ll continually reflect on their STEM work and set related goals. You’ll empower them to take ownership of their own learning and help them to foster a growth mindset related to STEM content areas and 21st century skills, including collaboration, communication, inquiry thinking, and problem solving.
