Het is geen toeval dat deze regio enkele van de meest gewilde koffies van Rwanda produceert. Abakundakawa heeft een lange weg afgelegd sinds het in 1999 begon als een vereniging van kleine boeren. Het werd een erkende coöperatie in 2007. Sindsdien is Abakundakawa erin geslaagd om in relatief korte tijd een geavanceerde operatie te worden met meer dan 2000 aangesloten boeren, die dient als een prachtig voorbeeld van hoe koffieproducenten de gespecialiseerde markt kunnen veranderen in een verkopersmarkt. De normen waaraan deze coöperatieve voldoet, zijn werkelijk verbazingwekkend: het heeft de faciliteiten om ter plaatse te roosteren en stalen te proeven, maakt gebruik van een volledig scala aan biologische verwerkingsmethoden (en is op weg om gecertificeerd biologisch te worden), biedt volledige transparantie in zijn boekhouding en heeft de afgelopen jaren technische en leiderschapstrainingen ontvangen van de Rwandese overheid en ontwikkelingsorganisaties - vooral van SNV, de betrouwbare ontwikkelingspartner van This Side Up in Rwanda. Wat betreft verwerking maakt het gebruik van een bijzonder lang fermentatieproces dat is overgenomen door verschillende nabijgelegen coöperatieve verenigingen, en waarschijnlijk heeft bijgedragen aan de bronzen medaille die ze hebben verdiend op de Rwanda Cup of Excellence competitie van 2010. Abakundakawa is ook een goed voorbeeld van hoe de Rwandese plattelandssamenleving op een hoopvolle en inspirerende manier omgaat met de gruwelen uit het verleden. Tijdens de genocide verloren veel Rwandese vrouwen hun echtgenoten en werden gedwongen om niet alleen voor henzelf, maar ook voor veel weeskinderen te zorgen. Deze vrouwen begonnen zich te organiseren in speciale organisaties voor vrouwelijke empowerment, maar hebben de afgelopen jaren ook geleerd dat het label "geproduceerd door vrouwen" een verhandelbare waarde heeft, en verkopen hun koffie nu apart tegen een premie. Dit heeft op zijn beurt een discussie op gang gebracht onder traditionele huishoudens (met mannen) over het eigendom van de koffiebomen. In Rwandese kleine boerenfamilies zijn de koffiebomen eigendom van mannen - maar als vrouwen een premie ontvangen voor hun productie, kan het financieel voordelig zijn om een deel van dit eigendom over te dragen aan de vrouwen in de huishoudens. Deze ontwikkeling helpt Rwandese vrouwen emancipatie en positie in de samenleving langzaam maar gestaag op gang te brengen. Abakundakawa onderscheidt zich door de ondersteuning van twee zeer succesvolle organisaties voor vrouwelijke empowerment: Duhingekawa en Abanyameraka.
