Tropical velvet worms are really cool, but they're only a few inches long. Wish they were bigger? A LOT bigger? Roughly 8 to 9 feet long? You've come to the right place. This pattern will take you step-by-step through planning and creating your own giant tropical velvet worm plush. It is fully customizable and illustrated, giving you the all the tools you need to make the massive velvet worm of your dreams. This pattern contains 20 pages of text and photos, detailing two main methods of construction. You can choose whether or not to have your worm open with a zipper, how many feet your worm has, whether or not you want the feet to open to the main body, and whether or not to fill the feet with weighted beads instead of stuffing. I would list this pattern at an intermediate difficulty. Required skills include: Accurately measuring and cutting long straight lines, drawing a curve, matching and sewing curved seams, clipping and turning out shaped seams, applying a zipper, basic math, and strength of will. velvet worm...
Velvet worms haven't changed much in the last 500 million years. In fact, they're full of prehistoric awesome.
Velvet Worm (Oroperipatus sp.) - Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area, Peru One of the more unusual critters I have encountered in my nocturnal wanderings through jungles. The velvet worm is in its own separate phylum closely related to arthropoda (Insects, crustaceans, arachnids, etc..) and tardigrada (water bears) but clearly different than anything in the aforementioned phyla. They are soft to the touch yet are predators capable of taking down prey similar to their own body size. To capture its prey this velvet worm sprays jets of sticky slime which slows the unfortunate prey item down long enough for the velvet worm to reach it. The soft body hides jaws which make quick work of any prey items. This is only the 2nd velvet worm I have ever come across in all my time in jungles
