'S Chair', handmade abstract wooden chair by Tom Vaughan British, 2020 Height 76.5cm, width 59cm, depth 54.5cm This S Chair is an early design by Tom Vaughan and is one of his first explorations into flow and movement; in this case, movement of the paintbrush. The chair’s form arises directly from the flowing curves of a hand-painted letter ‘S’, transforming the two-dimensional lines of calligraphy into a functional three-dimensional form. These early influences remain strong throughout all his work and are a noticeable signature. The beautifully hand-carved chair reflects the highly skilled craftsmanship of Vaughan’s studio, where, through constant innovation, he and his team produce complex works in wood, metals and plastics. Such pieces highlight his interest in converging traditional craft techniques with contemporary design and manufacturing processes. The flowing form and smooth materials of this particular piece particularly demonstrates the inspiration taken from Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Influenced by such artists, Vaughan stresses the tactile quality of each piece, and considers his work as functional sculpture. Artist/maker: Tom Vaughan (British, b. 1976)

There's nothing worse than having to guess a dimension. There have been times I've tried to re-create a piece of furniture, and haven't had actual sizes to work with. Most times it doesn't look quite right when finished. Fortunately I have the plans for the Steltman Chair. These come from the how to build Rietveld book (see below post). Here's the first page: It took me a few minutes to look at the dimensions and understand what was going on. I've never heard the term "to the gain" before. A short translation: "a.(1x) 44 x 100 x 635 (back post, 600 to gain)" means A is the name of the piece, (1X) means you'll need one of these, 44 x 100 x 635 is the size in MM of the piece that you start with. The "gain" size is shorter, meaning the size (in this case 600) is the FINISHED length. The The extra 35mm is the size of the tenon that inserts into the matching piece of wood. "to gain" Here's the second page, and I have added dimension conversions from MM to inches: (if you notice a mistake in my calculations please let me know!) Here is an exploded view of the chair, with each piece labeled: My wood supplier wont have my wood until next Sat, so in the meantime I will get some other items together...
Many people that get sawdust in their hair immediately recognize its benefits and never brush it out.
About This chair is named in honor of the famous lifeguard. David Mazel Tov is a design focused on perspectives and it allows two people to co-exist in a space with different points of view. When looking in opposite directions, you can focus on conversation, referee your own arguments or just enjoy your environment sipping a cocktail from the top. The structure is stabilized by the seats, no bracing. It’s a study of shape and balance, of connections among people and the juxtaposition of scales between furniture and architecture.

The 'Painful' solid wood seat, designed by Rhode Island Institute of Design student Sean Zhang in beech and walnut, doesn’t pain those seated in it. The title refers to the pain building a traditional Ming Dynasty chair, which featured a similar design.
