Children enjoy making words from Magic Squares, which incorporate vowel team and r-controlled spellings. This pack contains 35 Magic Squares for students to use to build and read words. The task is for students spell and read words using only the letters in the Magic Square. You will be amazed at how many words can be spelled from the letters in these squares! (There are 16 words that can be spelled using just the thumbnail image Magic Square.) The Magic Squares are very engaging, even for students who struggle to read and write. Included in this pack are two different Magic Squares for all vowel teams and ar, or, er, ir, ur. RULES: 1. Start in any letter box, and move on from one letter to another to make a word. 2. Do not jump over any letter. Move from box to box in any direction, but never skip over a box. 3. A letter from any box may be doubled. SCORING MAGIC SQUARES: Three points for each three-letter word. Four points for each four-letter word. Five points for each five-letter word, and so on. A student may earn two bonus points for thinking of each additional word that contains the vowel team on that particular magic square. These words need not be made up of the other letters on the square. ***I am certified by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (www.ortonacademy.org) as an Associate-level tutor.

This week I tried something new with the vocabulary in the story. I got the idea at a First Grade Conference in December. The student writes the vocabulary word in the middle of the sheet and then there are four things to do with the word. We completed two of the boxes together as a class and they finished the last two boxes independently. The kiddos sure had a great grasp of the vocabulary after this. When we read the story they had fantastic comprehension.
