Temple of Music, ca. 1750 (architects John Donowell and Nicholas Revett). West Wycombe Park (created by landscape architect Thomas Cook and architects John Donowell and Nicholas Revett for Sir Francis Dashwood from 1724 onward) is one of the most theatrical and Italianate of all English country houses. Arranged as an itinerary around a central man-made lake, it features a great number of follies heavily inspired by roman and palladian predecessors. Apart from the house itself, this includes the Temple of Music in the centre of the lake, temples of Diana, Venus, Apollo and Flora, as well as a Temple of the Winds, a gothic boathouse, and (perhaps most famously) the man-made caves of the notorious Hellfire Club and Dashwoods mausoleum perched on hill overlooking the park.
