Artists from the Soviet Union didn't just imagine a worker's Utopia on Earth. They also thought that the great communist experiment would eventually reach other worlds, too. Here are some incredible works of art and conceptual design that put the Soviet Union in space.

Michael Kurland – The Unicorn Girl
A great psychedelic robot from the future. From Comicon: "The New Zealand-born artist made Manhattan his home in 1966 and was a part of the science fiction and comics scene for the next few decades. He produced covers and interiors for numerous SF magazines and for mainstream venues, including several TIME covers. In the early 1970s, SUPERGRAPHICS published a collection of his techno-oriented work titled "The Mike Hinge Experience". Mr. Hinge's super-detailed and elaborate art style predated the digital illustration revolution and many of the artist's works foreshadowed the coming elegance and intricacy of computer art. In later years, PC technology caught up with him. According to friend Sanford Meschkow, "Sadly, the computer revolution in graphics in the 1990s was the effective cause of the early end of Mike's professional career." Among Mr. Hinge's last professional commissions was a cover for the large-format revival of AMAZING magazine in 1993."

Jupiter Books hardback, 1974. Cover painting by Frank R. Paul illustrating Life On Uranus for Fantastic Adventures magazine. This book covers ground from roughly 1884 and like Brian Aldiss' book Science Fiction Art - The Fantasies Of SF (1975) there is heavy bias towards pulp artwork, in particular those from the 1930's; the most contemporary piece of artwork I found was from an issue of Fantastic Adventures dated 1940. Paul's cover illustration was accompanied by the following text: "The inhabitant of Uranus lives on a rigorous planet indeed. He is confronted with tremendous gravity, dense atmosphere, poison gases, and great storms." Cover for Astounding Science Fiction, April 1938 by Howard V. Brown. Cover for Astounding Science Fiction, November 1938 by Howard V. Brown. Cover for Amazing Stories, August 1927 by Frank R. Paul. Cover for Fantasy - Thrilling Science Fiction #1, 1939 by by S. R. Introduced in 1977 the Technics SA-1000 was one of the most powerfull receivers ever made: 330 Watts per channel minimum RMS into 8 ohms from 20 Hz-20 kHz with no more than 0.03% total harmonic distortion. To capture the sheer dynamics of a live symphony, there was an equally dynamic amplifier section. Like 72,000 microF worth of high capacitance filtering, separate DC rectifiers, current-mirror loading and direct coupling. The results were impressive: tremendous reserve power, negligible transient crosstalk distortion and excellent stability. As good as all that sounds, Technics Acoustic Control made it sound even better, because it added low and high range boost and filter switches to enhance the tone controls. There was also a midrange control with a variable center frequency, 24 LED peak-power indicators and automatic load impedance detector.
