We recently had a lesson about the 12 Sons of Jacob. I love teaching about Joseph and his brothers. The KIDDOS seem to get excited about how BIG of a family Jacob had. This LESSON introduces a LOT of names. Some are easy for the KIDDOS to remember and some are very difficult. We practice the names of the Sons of Jacob through SONS, CHANTS, RHYMES and GAMES. Since memorizing the Sons of Jacob is an opportunity for the KIDDOS to earn a BIBLE BADGE...we work hard during this lesson to GET THOSE NAMES memorized. :-) Our Visual Aid... 12 Sons 3D puff containers were very helpful in the KIDDOS memorizing the names of the 12 Sons of Jacob. I also, have cards made up that share the meaning of each of the son's names along with their mother and their birth order number. Its amazing how quickly the KIDDOS seemed to remember the meaning of each of the son's names. This is one of the songs we sing that helps the KIDDOS memorize the names of Jacob's sons in birth order. The KIDDOS memory verse was Psalm 127:3. This is one of my FAVORITE Bible Verses!!! The KIDDOS made a Dodecahedron for their TAKE HOME project. It is a 12 sided object and they added sticker of each son of Jacob. The sticker pictures are made using clip art by Phillip Martin. I did have to cut around and make some WORK. :-) Bible Clip Art I added names and ran them through my sticker maker machine. The KIDDOS LOVED adding the stickers!!!! Just to keep the Dodecahedron from collapsing we stuffed each one with tissue paper. The KIDDOS did have to have a WORD of Warning...NO THROWING them in the church building. The following week the KIDDOS made these for their EXPLORER JOURNAL ACTIVITY. We call them 12 Sons Flip Flaps Activity. I did all the slicing of the doors/flaps...the KIDDOS colored the pictures of the Sons of Jacob as we sang their names. Here are a few more VISUALS that I used during these lessons. I have had these for SEVERAL years. I made them a long time ago. I also had this visual on the table. I used it as we sang the names, reviewed their name meaning or recalled their birth order. This is a "fun" lesson to teach KIDDOS. They seem to be drawn into this BIG FAMILY. They enjoyed learning the meaning of each son's name and earning their BADGE for knowing the names!!! Blessings, Ronda
This is lesson four in a 13-week series that I used in my class. I wanted one quarter to introduce the Old Testament with a basic timeline of the people and events. The students can learn what happened in the Old Testament and how those events lead to Jesus. These lessons are a combination of the Life Overview Series and other lessons. They have been updated and tweaked since I taught these. I will show you what I used to blend several posts into 13 lessons. It was basically pick and choose and you can change any to fit your needs or wants. For instance, I always teach Esther so that is one of the lessons. And I picked Daniel as the last lesson. Those can be substituted if you prefer another. This lesson teaches about Jacob and his 12 Sons vs. the 12 Tribes of Israel. This lesson will explain how the two statements are somewhat alike, but what the differences are and God’s plan for that. They need to understand this concept before teaching about the land division with Moses and Joshua. The lesson explains the Big Picture. This is an updated lesson that was posted here. Keep in mind these lessons are slightly longer with very different application reviews. One of the updates I created are these picture visuals. Click here to see the originals. Yes, it was time... they are 10 years old! Actually, older than that because I used them for several years before adding them here. I previously used Velcro on a tri-fold board. This time I decided to add magnets on the back of everything and use my white board. Either way makes a nice way to teach this lesson. Sorry, these are a separate link from the lesson file. Click here to download the updated visuals. I used these information Anchor Charts to explain certain concepts as I taught the lesson. There are more Anchor Charts and a map included. I added the question and answer worksheet to the application pack for convenience. The lesson is updated and the notes are included so you know when I changed certain items. For instance changing the title from Sons to Tribes and Jacob to Israel. Click here to download the lesson, these posters and the worksheet. I also used this Bible Timeline File Folder Game. I made the pictures into stickers (which they love!) and the students added to it each week. Even though we studied Jesus and Acts after this quarter, rather than removing any pictures, I printed those pictures already on the page along with a couple that we wouldn't have as it's own lesson. Click here if you want to print the one I used with some of the pictures already in place. This includes the completed teacher's visual also. The original file has a teacher's visual completed. and a student file folder without any pictures on the timeline. All pictures will need to be cut and glued or made into stickers to use. What you see in blue is what I did using the visual while telling the Bible lesson. I either pointed to it or added/subtracted from the visual. Lesson found in Genesis 30 and 32: (After review...) Today we are going to start with Abraham and then we are going to jump to Jacob and the 12 Tribes of Israel. When Abraham was 99 years old, God appeared to him. Even though Abraham didn’t have sons, God told him to “Look toward the heaven and count the stars, if you can and that is how many descendants you will have.” (15:5-6) (Explain descendants) He believed what God told him. He said that Abraham would be 'a father of many nations'. Nations and kings would come from his descendants. And, as God promised, Abraham and Sarah had a son named Isaac. Isaac married Rebekah and they had twins named Jacob and Esau. We are going to spend most of our time talking about Jacob and his family today because through Abraham to Jacob, Jesus was born. Jacob had 12 sons. Looking at our board, we have Jacob and his 12 sons, from the oldest (Reuben) to the youngest (Benjamin). Let's talk about Joseph. Jacob liked his 11th son Joseph the most, and he gave him a coat of many colors. You all know about Joseph. His brothers were so jealous that they put him in a pit and when some traders came by, they sold Joseph for 20 shekels of silver. Joseph ended up in Egypt and did what God wanted him to, and he was second in charge after Pharaoh. His brothers went to Egypt and after a time, Joseph told them who he was, and Joseph was able to see his father Jacob again. Joseph had 2 sons named Ephraim & Manasseh. (Hold up the 2 sons) Let's look at the board again. The title is The 12 Sons of Jacob. That's easy to understand. [Genesis 32:22-31] One night, Jacob wrestled with a Man. When it was close to morning, the Man told him that “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel." Jacob said he had seen God face to face. Now, we are going to change Jacob's name to Israel. Eventually, the Promised land was divided up. Moses and Joshua, doing exactly what God wanted, were the ones that made the final decisions on who received what land. Levi was considered the priesthood and took care of all the religious duties. He took care of the tabernacle and everything inside of it. So, he was not given part of the land. So, we will take him off the board. Joseph was considered a patriarch and that was considered more of an honor, so he was not given part of the land. A patriarch is a man who is the leader of a family, clan, or tribe. We will take him of the board also. Now we have 2 empty places! Also, since each person was given a section of land, and they had their whole groups of families living with them, and they had huge families back then, as a group they were each called a tribe. So, we will take down 12 Sons, since we know that each of the 12 sons didn't get a part of the land, and we will change it to The 12 Tribes of Israel. We are not finished yet, though, we know there were 12 Tribes. Since Joseph was considered a patriarch now, he was not given a portion of the land, the portions were given to his sons. So, we will add Joseph's 2 sons Ephraim and Manasseh to the board to complete the 12 men. That is how the 12 Sons of Jacob became the 12 Tribes of Israel. These posters were requested to be used with the 12 Sons of Jacob song. These posters can be used as a flip chart to teach about Jacob's sons, and they can be used as a bulletin board. I included the single chart you see above. There are single posters for each son on a full sheet and 2 per page if you want smaller or want to save ink. These are in color only. You can use these with the Sons of Jacob Song found here. Click here to download the Sons of Jacob Posters.

Today's lesson is continuing with Jacob and his family. We will discuss his leaving Laban with Leah and Rachel and his children. He wrestles an angel and sees Esau again. We also touch on his twelve sons. We will finish Genesis in the next three weeks studying Joseph. Review: Abraham and Sarah had Isaac and God promised Abraham that he would have as many descendants as there were stars in the sky. So, through Abraham, his son Isaac married Rebekah and they had twins named Esau and Jacob. Jacob had 2 wives, but God allowed that back then so people could populate the earth. God didn’t like it, but He put up with it. The New Testament says to be faithful to one wife. Today's lesson is found in Genesis 29-32. We are going to learn more about Jacob and his family. Jacob worked for their father, Laban for 20 years. Jacob told Laban he wanted to leave and asked for wages for the time worked. Jacob said that the animals had done well under his care. They came to an agreement and Jacob picked the animals from Laban’s flock that he wanted. Jacob told Leah and Rachel that God talked to him and told him to go back to his birthplace in Canaan. In the morning, they prepared to leave. Jacob gathered up everything that was theirs, including all the animals that he had earned working for Laban. The whole family rode camels to travel back to Jacob’s home. Laban didn't want Jacob to take his daughters and grandchildren away from him, so Jacob snuck away in the morning while Laban was out in the field sheering the sheep. Laban caught up with Jacob and his family while they were traveling and, even though Laban wasn't happy that they were leaving, Laban and Jacob made an agreement not to argue about it. It was an interesting trip! Jacob was told that his brother Esau was close by with a lot of people. That terrified Jacob because he was afraid that Esau still wanted to kill him because Jacob had tricked Esau. That night, Jacob sent everyone, including his eleven sons, across the river ahead of him. That left Jacob alone. During the night, Jacob wrestled with a Man! (Genesis 32:24) And in the morning, Jacob said, “It’s morning, let’s quit.” Jacob found out it was an angel he’d been wrestling with! The angel said that Jacob's name wouldn’t be Jacob anymore, it would be Israel now. (Original text means angel, messenger from God. This is one of the scriptures that I use to teach the children that angels do not have wings. If the angel had wings, Jacob would have felt them and known who he was wrestling. Cherubim and Seraphim's being different from an angel. Since the word angel means messenger, and they did/do different jobs than being a messenger for God. And, BTW, all the angels in the Bible are men.) When Jacob looked up, he saw Esau! But Esau told him not to worry; he had enough and didn’t want anything from Jacob. Everyone was brought before Esau, and he met Jacob’s family. They left in peace and stopped in Bethel, where Jacob had the dream on his way to visit Laban. Just after that, Rachel gave birth to Jacob's last son. She died but the baby lived, and Jacob named him Benjamin. Jacob traveled farther and pitched his tent. This Interactive Bible Notebook Page can be used for any age Bible student. It can be use in a Bible Class setting at church and also in a Homeschool setting. I used it with grade K-2, but I think older ages would benefit as well. Simply glue the pockets onto the page and add each son/daughter to the correct mother. I have also included a cheat sheet to add to the back of the page if items get mixed up. Each page comes in either a colored or black and white format. I printed everything on cardstock and laminated everything. There are links are at the end of this lesson to download everything but the map. NOTE: Joseph, Levi, & both of Joseph's sons AND their scroll name tags ...ALSO, the 4 title pieces are attached with Velcro to the board. All the rest are attached with sticky dots. (Found in the scrapbook isle.) The extra pieces with the Velcro are saved in a 6x9 brown clasp envelope attached to the back of the board during storage. (This tent stays up in my class permanently and I switch the banners. I teach a class for 1 year, and mostly teach Acts. I start with a very condensed life of Jesus, lead into Acts and Paul, then finish with letters from Paul, and having a couple of lessons about the old law & the new law.)
