1939 Ford Deluxe Convertible Fans of American cars of the 1930s know well that the 1939 Fords, including the 1939 Ford Deluxe, adopted hydraulic brakes. After years of stubbornly resisting this advance in engineering as market rivals Plymouth and then Chevrolet adopted it, Henry Ford abruptly reversed course in time for “juice brakes” to be...
Extremely rare six foot wide 1930s Budweiser neon sign! This stunning Budweiser sign dates from the 1930s and is extremely rare, principally because the logo incorporates a winged motif. Trivia fans might be interested to note that a well-established restaurant chain called ‘Steak and Shake’ took Budweiser to court claiming that the winged shape breached their copyright. The restaurant’s court victory resulted in Budweiser having to modify the design of their logo, and this is why the wings only appear on much older vending machines, signs and memorabilia. The sign measures a considerable 6ft x 3ft and can either be hung or simply bolted to the wall. It has undergone a thorough restoration which includes being adapted to a UK power supply and has of course been safety checked. It will be apparent from the photos above that, unlike many neon signs, this one also looks pretty cool when not illuminated! This is a real beauty and needs to be seen to be truly appreciated. Deco The term was coined in the 1960's as such and came from the International exhibition of "Decorative arts & modern industries" held in Paris in 1925. This exhibition was meant to be held long before this date as a direct response of the International exhibitions of Torino and Milan, respectively held in 1902 & 1906. Due to lack of funding, agreements between organizers and finally WW1, this major exhibition was put off until 1925, when times became more favorable for such a massive undertaking. As one can imagine, the tastes of 1925 were drastically different than in 1910 and allowed for radical new ideas to emerge. Now, what is "art Deco"? Be it in France, USA, Japan or Europe in general, the similarity is striking. The main difference is timing, French Art Deco lasted from 1918 to 1939, American Art Deco goes beyond that time and started later on as a movement. We know this movement was abandoned in France in 1939 as the German Nazis started using Deco symbols and the French reacted negatively and simply moved away from this style. In essence "Art Deco" is a style represented by symmetrical, rectilinear lines, abstract designs & bold contrasting colors embracing industrial techniques as a whole. In contrast, Art Nouveau was more focused on asymmetrical lines (whiplash curves), realistic true to nature design and soft coordinated colors, with the big movement leaders against using industrial techniques (though most used it). Our focus here will be on glass, more importantly on one great artist of this era: Charles Schneider. Schneider is fast becoming recognized, and rightly so, as the leading force in art glass during the Art Deco movement. His contribution is an important one in influencing and initiating the art glass movement transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco in France.

The style originated in the 1920s and continued to be employed until after World War II. The term "art deco" first saw wide use after an exhibition in 1966, referring to the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes that was the culmination of high-end style modern in Paris. Led by the best designers in the decorative arts such as fashion, and interior design, Art Deco affected all areas of design throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including architecture and industrial design, as well as the visual arts such as painting, the graphic arts and film. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. Style specifics: Abstract motives and geometrical forms are quite typical for the Art Deco period. Art Deco moved away from the soft pastels and organic forms of its style predecessor, Art Nouveau, and embraced influences from many different styles and movements of the early 20th century, including Neoclassical, Constructivism, Cubism, Modernism, and Futurism. Its popularity peaked in Europe during the Roaring Twenties and continued strongly in the United States through the 1930s. In the 1880 – 1940 there was a grate wave of immigration encouraged by the periods of war that were taking place. 1st World War took place between 1914 and 1918 2nd World War took place between 1939 and 1945 The immigrants options were New York or Buenos Aires. Tickets were cheap and in Buenos Aires they were welcomed with open arms, as it was a country where everything was still to be done. Argentina was the country of new opportunities, labour was needed and religious freedom was assured, in many cases the of the family travel first until they were settled and then the rest of the family members join them. In the immigrant museum "Ellis Island Immigrant Building” in New York you can se the promotional posters of the boats that would take them to a new life. Between the years 1895 and 1896, Argentina had the highest DGP (gross domestic product) per capita in the world according to the Maddison Historical Statistics index, this situation arose due to the large amount of food being exported to European countries, which were at war. The Argentinean ships left the port of Buenos Aires with food, but they returned with furniture, clothes and construction elements, (it´s common to see this the old buildings of the historic neighbourhood of San Telmo, the beams with the inscription "Made in England)”, as well as many markets that were built in Buenos Aires, such us the San Telmo Market, whose structure was brought by ship and afterwards assembled in 900 Defensa Street. With the great influence of European immigrants living in the country, the children of the upper classes travelled to study in France, resulting in the inauguration of "La Maison Argentinienne”, on 27th of June 1928, in the international city of Paris, which hosted many Argentinians that were studying in Frace. It´s the fourth house to be built after France, Canada and Belgium, being the first Spanish-speaking one. Still in place today (17 Bd Jourdan, 75014, Paris, France). Many of the children of these wealthy families who attended international art exhibitions, museums and art courses abroad, took a keen interest in the European style. This is why Buenos Aires was at the time referred as "The Paris of South America”. Between the years 1890 and 1920 more than a hundred Palaces were built on Alvear Avenue the most exclusive avenue in Buenos Aires. Today some of these palaces have been transformed into museums, hotels and embassies. In the year 1936, the Kavanagh building was inaugurated, it was the tallest reinforced concrete building in South America. During 1994 the American Society of Civil Engineers distinguished it as an "international engineering milestone”, and it´s now considered a World Heritage of Modern Architecture. At the time was common to hire foreign architects such as Le Corbusier, who visited Buenos Aires/Argentina in 1929 and in 1948 he drew up the blueprints for a house built in La Plata City (which was declared a World Heritage Site). In 1947, the Hungarian architect Marcelo Breuer designed "Parador Ariston” in the seaside city of Mar del Plata. After an Argentinean student at Harvard University convinced him to come to Argentina. He worked on an urban development project in the Casa Amarilla, area of La Boca. The Ukrainian architect, Vladimiro Acosta, arrives in Argentina in 1928 and worked as an architect until que moved to Brazil. Antonio Bonet, a Spanish architect who worked with Le Corbusier in Paris, arrives in Argentina in 1937, where he carried out several architectural works and in 1938 designs the well-known BFK chair. Andres Kálnay, of Hungarian origin, made around 120 architectural masterpieces, among which the former Munich brewery stands out, he even made the furniture’s design. The German architect, Walter Gropius, director of the Bauhaus, lived in Argentina, where he wrote articles for "Sur” magazine and founded in Buenos Aires, an architectural firm with Franz Möller, who was also an architect, where he built two houses. At the same time several famous designers decided to immigrate to Argentina, among them we can find the well-known French designer, Jean-Michel Frank, who arrived in the country in 1940 and also worked for the Rockefeller family. Special pieces were made, which were sold exclusively in the country, such as the well-known German company "WMF”, who sold their products by catalogue, which were chosen by the ladies of high society in the list of wedding gifts, as well as the pieces designed by Christofle. About This S33 chair by Mart Stam is a design icon from 1926. It was produced by the German Thonet manufactory. Our piece comes from the 1960s. It is the first cantilever chair in the history. Mart Stam experimented with gas pipes which he connected by flanges and developed the form of chairs that no longer rest on four legs. In this way, he created a construction principle that has become an important element in the history of modern furniture design. This chair is made of tubular steel, over which black natural leather has been stretched. This chair combines the spirit of the Bauhaus school and the awareness of tradition. Why four legs, when two are enough - wrote the artist Kurt Schwitters in 1927, when he saw the first cantilever chairs in history. This piece has a label under the seat, but now is just a traces after this label. Mart Stam was a Dutch architect, town planner and furniture designer. His career coincides with important moments in the history of European architecture of the 20th century. He is credited with part of the design of the Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, built between 1926 and 1930. This coffee and tea factory is still a powerful example of early modern industrial architecture. New research indicates that Stam was inspired by the cantilever tubular steel seat fitted to the 1926 Tatra T12 two-door saloon. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe found out about Stam's work on the chair during the planning of the Weissenhof Siedlung and mentioned it to Marcel Breuer. This led to a variation on the cantilever steel chair and ushered in an entire genre of design. In the late 1920s, Breuer and Stam were involved in a patent process in German courts, both claiming to be the inventors of the basic principle of cantilever chair design. Stam won the lawsuit. In the US, Breuer assigned the rights to his designs to Knoll and for this reason you can find an identical chair attributed to Stam in Europe and Breuer in the USA. Mart Stam designed a house for the Weissenhof estate from 1927, a permanent housing project developed and presented at the Die Wohnung exhibition, organized by Deutscher Werkbund in Stuttgart. This placed him in the company of crème de la crème of the architectural circles, i.e. Le Corbusier, Peter Behrens, Bruno Taut, Hans Poelzig and Walter Gropius. Thonet is the oldest existing furniture company in the world. It began its long business in 1819 when the carpenter Michael Thonet founded a furniture workshop in Boppard, Germany. A supporter of the Biedermeier style, he specialized in chairs, tables and cabinets characterized by clean lines, reduced ornamentation and an emphasis on the principles of functionalism. In the 1930s, Thonet's experiments with glued and steam-bent wood furniture, such as his famous Boppard chair (1836), brought international acclaim. Thonet's projects achieved lightness, durability and comfort unprecedented in European furniture at that time. The iconic works of the Thonet collection include: rocking chair No. 1 (1860), cafe chair No. 14 (c. 1859), chair of the Adolf Loos cafe museum (1899), chair No. 209 (c. 1900), Otto Wagner's chair No. 247 (1904) and Josef Hoffmann's No. 811 (1925). In the early 1920s, Gebrüder Thonet also began producing bent tubular steel designs by Bauhaus masters such as Marcel Breuer, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Mart Stam. This chair is in original vintage condition. It has minor scratches on the leather and a natural patina. Measure: The seat is 43 cm high.

Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. Occurring during the time of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, the "Belle Époque" was named in retrospect, when it began to be considered a "golden age" the major powers of Europe, new technologies improved lives and the commercial arts adapted Renaissance and eighteenth-century styles to modern forms. Although many design movements have political or philosophical roots or intentions, Art Deco was purely decorative. Period: ca. 1930 Material: 18K white gold (touchstone tested) Diamond(s): One old brilliant cut diamond with an estimated weight of ± 0.23 ct. At the time, this style was seen as elegant, glamorous, functional and modern. - The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I. In the newly rich United States, emerging from the Panic of 1873, the comparable epoch was dubbed the Gilded Age. In the United Kingdom, this epoch overlaps the end of what is called the Victorian Era there and the period named the Edwardian Era. Period: ca. 1950-1960 Extra information: Although the stones are from the second half of the 19th Century and the style of the ring is from around 1900, the ring has been made and hallmarked in the Netherlands after 1953. It is not unusual that when a jewel is broken or worn that the owners have the original jewel copied by a goldsmith. This could explain why the ring has been made after 1953 in a style 50 years older. - The Belle Époque (French for "Beautiful Era") was a period in European social history that began during the late 19th century and lasted until World War I.
