Hierve El Agua, near Oaxaca, South Mexico Hierve el Agua (Spanish for "the water boils") is set of natural rock formations in the Mexican state of Oaxaca that look like waterfalls. The site is located about 70 kilometers east of Oaxaca city, past Mitla, in the municipality of San Lorenzo Albarradas, with a narrow, winding unpaved road leading to the site. The site consists of two rock shelves or cliffs which rise between fifty and ninety meters from the valley below, from which extend nearly white rock formations which look like waterfalls. These formations are created by fresh water springs, whose water is over saturated with calcium carbonate and other minerals. As the water scurries over the cliffs, the excess minerals are deposited, much in the same manner that stalactites are formed in caves. One of the cliffs, called the “casacada chica” (small waterfall) or the Amphitheatre, contains two large artificial pools for swimming as well as a number of small natural pools. One of the artificial pools is very near the edge of the cliff. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierve_el_Agua
From basalt columns to balancing rocks, some geological wonders seem like human creations. Here are 13 natural rock formations that defy the odds.
Fire Cave, sometimes referred to as Windstone Arch, can be found in Valley of Fire State Park, about 1 hour from Las Vegas, Nevada. The “Windstone Arch” is located on the gravel loop near the campground. The arch is in a mini wind tunnel formed out of Sandstone rock. It's a standalone rock formation start looking inside the cavity of the rock where the wind and erosion has removed the rock base. When i crawled inside the little cave i noticed how small it was (i'm probably too big for places like this) and could hardly move once being inside of it. I used a silver light reflector in the background to give me some light on the little arch and some light in the foreground. Image is part of the south-west tour. So about 30 minutes after I took the silhouette sunrise photo at Balance Rock, I drove down the highway to this place, Organ Rock. The clouds on this morning were those great high, wispy ones that make for great skies. The sun was just about to crest the La Sal Mountains and when it did it lit up this monolith rock formation and the colors began to pop.

Totem Pole rock formation in Monument Valley before sunset. The Navajo nation prohibits visitors from leaving the dirt road,, so the opportunities for getting a good perspective are limited. I darkened the sky quite a bit, so the image looks overcooked. The high saturation came naturally, perhaps I should have toned it down. bighugelabs.com/flickr/onblack.php?id=3139554758&post...
