“Chaotic calm” explores the way anxiety can be represented through natural landscapes using the colours and forms within. Through personal experience and also secondary research, I have noticed there is a lack of research to alternative methods which could help relieve anxiety. Sensory stimulation inspired by the natural environment is the main experience reflected, focusing on how material can affect colour and vice versa. Colour has been inspired by the ‘calm’ side of my project influenced by my peaceful landscape photography. Calming and warming almost cosy tones are chosen to relax and soothe. Ensuring the wellbeing of the environment too, a mix of natural wools and organic cottons are used in the designs. Working as a whole, the sensory blankets and hand-held objects can be used at different stages of anxiety. All provide a completely different sensory stimulation to provide calmness, relief, distraction, or as a conversation piece. My aim is to visually express the emotional struggle people have with their own minds – their chaotic calm, to give a better understanding of day-to-day struggles. I have combined the conceptual visual representation of anxiety with a functional design using different sensory stimulating techniques through soft and hard materials, and carefully considered colour, to help reduce anxiety.
