The Thor’s Helmet Nebula photo resembles a Norse god's winged helmet. The nebula is located in the constellation of Canis Major, the Great Dog. It is about 12-thousand light years from Earth and is about 30-light years in diameter. The nebula was formed by the expulsion of the atmosphere of an extremely hot Wolf-Rayet star WR7 leaving the extremely hot stellar core exposed. The expulsion of the outer-atmosphere by a Wolf-Rayet star is the signal that the star is in its pre-supernova stage. In the case of the of NGC 2359, the spherical expulsion shell has been deformed over time by interstellar winds which have generated the winged structure of the helmet. The red coloring in the image marks places where hydrogen gas is dominant and the blue/teal color marks places where oxygen is dominant. Two science filters were used to capture the data used to form my Flickr photo. The HOO Palette uses narrowband data obtained from singly ionized hydrogen (HII) and doubly ionized oxygen (OIII) to form the color scheme. HII data is mapped to the red channel and OIII data is mapped to both the green and blue channels of the processing software. By mapping of the OIII image data into both green and blue software processing channels, the resultant image is a blend of green and blue which approximately mimics the teal color of OIII alone. The acronym HOO is shorthand for Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Oxygen. The HOO Palette produces a false color image that has some related color features of a true colored image. The CHI-3 astrograph used to acquire the image is located at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile. The CHI-3 astrograph is optically composed of a ASA RC-1000AZ 1 meter (39") diameter reflecting telescope with a 6800 mm (267") focal length and a f/6.8 photographic speed. The imaging system attached to CHI-3 is the Finger Lakes Instrumentation FLI PL16803 Monochrome CCD astronomical imaging camera with AstroDon 2Gen HII and OIII (3 nm) narrowband filters which can be inserted into the optical train of the system in front of the camera. Two hours of 10-minute exposures were taken to produce the final image using the HII and OIII filters. The processing programs used to construct the Flickr image were Astro Pixel Processer, PixInsight, and Photoshop.
