To take advantage of the great spiritual fruits that God gives us through the Eucharistic Celebration, we should know the Catholic Mass
"The Holy Mass" Thomas Noyes-Lewis This reverent painting of the Mass illustrates the invisible aspects of the Mass, where the Host is surrounded by angels and saints. One thing to understand about the Mass, we are joining in with the Heavenly worship of the Lord. The Mass is the re-presentation of Christ on the Cross, that exact moment in history perpetuated throughout the ages (Catechism 1323). When the priest makes the sacrifice, angels of the Heavenly Host are present. St. John Chrysostom, among others, stated that “When Mass is being celebrated, the Sanctuary is filled with countless Angels who adore the Divine Victim immolated on the altar.” Your guardian angel is up there, reverently worshiping the Lord! (sources: quote, ewtn.com. catechism, usccb.com) Thomas Noyes-Lewis (1862-1946) was a British painter known for his extraordinary religious art. He was also known for his civic art, and he did commercial art as well. We think the date for this painting was just after WWII, maybe in 1920. ** IMPORTANT ** IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER!! Precious Blood Antique German Holy Card The Precious Blood is the Blood of Christ. We have been purchased at a price (1 Corinthians 6:20). St. Peter said, "You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers … with the precious blood of Christ," (1 Peter 1:18-19). We tend to think of blood in terms of modern chemistry, an iron-rich fluid that brings oxygen and nutrients to the cells of our body. To the ancients and the faithful, it is more than that, it is life, as in the phrase “lifeblood.” The Church teaches in the Catechism, paragraph 1324, “The Eucharist is ‘the source and summit of the Christian life.’ The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch." In this beautiful print from a vintage holy card, the angel gathers the blood of the dying Christ. We hope you find this art helpful in your journey towards our Lord. The German on the front reads “He has set free all those who, through the fear of death, have been subject to bondage all their lives.” (Bible quotes from www.usccb.org) Update: We're starting to think this might be the work of artist Brother Max Schmazal. ** IMPORTANT ** IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER!!
