Brooklyn-based furniture designer and sculptor Matthias Pliessnig creates sumptuous, twisting benches by steam-bending hardwood. He first developed the process in 2006 while studying wooden boat building techniques at the University of Wisconsin-Madison when he realized that by flipping his boat-inspired creations over, he could use the hollow form as a sturdy bench. Once he has designed his works using Rhinoceros 3-D software, Pliessnig places a strips of wood into a tube filled with hot steam. More

Many of us are doing everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint at home. We’re making an effort to recycle, catching public transport where possible, and reducing the amount of electricity we use. Now that global warming is at such a critical point, we've realized that we should be doing everything we possibly can to reverse it. But what about when we travel? Do any of us think about what impact we might be having while we’re skipping and jumping between countries? I know it’s not pleasant to think that we might be damaging the environment by exploring new places, but unfortunately travel leaves a carbon footprint too.

The Legolas Masquette is a sculpted miniature visage which is a unique and one-of as part of a series of Silvan Masquettes fashioned as a fanciful likeness of the valorous Prince of Mirkwood and created to evoke the wood spirits of Celtic and Druidic elvin lore. This artwork is hand-carved (inside and out) from a single block of reclaimed Huon Pine, and is a thickness of several millimetres throughout. The features of the face flow out to curled edges like the corners of an ancient parchment. This artwork is 127mm (5 inches) high, 87mm (3.43 inches) wide and 55mm (2.17 inches) deep and weighs 34 grams. The finish is hand-burnished clear acrylic polymer lacquer. As part of the NightWing collector's series, the work is provided with a handmade padded and velvet-lined box for display or storage (see image 10).
These unique extra-large wooden pendants are made from: a) Sassafras wood (9x6.5 cm) b) Blackwood (10 x 7 cm) c) Huon pine (9 x 6.5 cm) All my creations are unique pieces. I first design the wooden blanks on the computer and then have them cut with the laser cutter. The blanks are then shaped by hand and given a carnauba wax finish.
