Teaching preschoolers about the 5 senses is so much fun! You can do so many different activities, but to make things easy for you, I am sharing my favorites from my 5 Senses Weekly Curriculum.
Kids will LOVE this silly 5 Senses Activity as they learn using the FREE printable 5 senses spinner.
Our theme this week was "Our Five Senses" and we focused on the letter B and the shape circle. We read this week: Ferdinand by Munro Leaf Paddington by Mark Brown Paddington and the Busy Bee Carnival by Mark Brown The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Stellaluna by Janelle Cannon Our question of the week was "What is something that you are really good at?" For our theme of the week, we talked a lot about our senses, what they help us do and why we need them. We made texture collages: This week is full of some of my favorite activities from the year, these texture collages being one of them. I love how each one is different, and the kids are so proud of the texture choices that they make. AND they look amazing on the wall. We tasted sweet, salty and sour things, and the kids had to vote on their favorite taste. (They think it's awesome when they get to eat things as part of a project.) We tested their sense of smells with this project where I asked them to describe the things that they were smelling. I used perfume, shampoo, chocolate syrup, pickle juice, toothpaste and (the most tricky) water. Out on our schools nature trail we talked about the different sounds that we could hear. We did this at various points of our walk, close to the school, by the parking lot and deeper in the woods. Lastly we did another activity with the sense of touch. I set up my table with different texture objects. I used flour, rice, oatmeal, sand and a scrubbing sponge. As the students felt each thing, I asked them to describe what they were feeling. It was hard to get them away from just telling them what the items were and to use describing words, but we got there in the end. For our shape of the week, the kids practiced drawing circles with this cool worksheet of circles and another with squares and circles. We also worked on recognizing circles out of other shapes. We talked a lot about things that are circles. We sang the song "This is a circle, this is a circle. How can you tell? How can you tell? It goes round and round, No end can be found, It's a circle, it's a circle." -Found Here For our letter activities, we used our handwriting sheet for the letter B, the sheet that helps work on letter recognition, both were mentioned in the "All About Me" post. The students also wrote in their journals for the letter B. We turned B's into Bees! After we read Ferdinand we all made our own bees. This was a great way for the kids to practice their cutting skills. I love how each child's bee is different. Another project that we did (another one of my favorites all year) is the Boat Builder activity. I love it because I give the students the materials and the end result is something completely their own. Each child got a piece of white paper, a square of brown paper, a skinny black rectangle, scissors, a glue stick and crayons with the instruction of make me a boat however you want to. (They love when I say that). If I get "I don't know how..." or " I can't do it.." We go back a few steps and talk about boats.. what do they look like, where do we find them, what do they do, and then the creative juices start flowing. Here's the end results! Love it! For our Alphabet wall we made butterflies with coffee filters and water color paint. After the children painted their coffee filters and they dried I used small pipe cleaners to turn them into butterflies! And with the B addition, our wall now looks like... Our list for words beginning with B's was very impressive. Here it is! As a side note, teachers always need to be flexible, and as such, it was in the best interest of the flow of the classroom to switch two centers, the library and dramatic play center. And I'm always telling the kids to make sure that they turn off the water faucet after getting a drink or washing their hands. I tell them to "Save the water for the fishes, so I painted a mural for above the sink to remind them. Up next week: The letter C, Triangles and "Our Feelings".

I received such a great response from this post, I created a Five Senses Unit using many of the ideas below (plus a few more)! You can find out more about it here Don't miss the freebie! Or purchase it here We had a great week learning about our five senses! I started using science journals this year and so far I am loving them! It's such a great way for all my students to be able to participate during our large group time. During our large group time, we drew our five senses in our journals. Nose - Smell We explored smelly jars for our sense of smell. The jars are really simple. You can use film canisters, baby food jars, or empty spice containers. Place a cotton ball in the film canister and then drop a few drops of "scent". I used cinnamon, chicken bullion, peppermint extract, chocolate, perfume, and vanilla. Eyes - See We explored the outdoors using our sense of sight. I had my students draw what they could see. We talked about what color the grass is and what color we would use to draw it in our journals, etc. Ears - Hear We played a smartboard game to explore our sense of hearing. It was really simple. I just went into Microsoft Powerpoint and used the sounds already in the program. On the first page I put a sound, then on the next page I put a picture of what makes that sound. I added about 10 sounds, which was the perfect amount for the attention span of my kiddos. After I played a sound, the kids tried to guess what makes that sound. Skin - Feel We added different textures to a hand cut out for the sense of touch. I got this great idea from pinterest of course! I was really suprised at how much of a vocabulary lesson this turned out to be. I ended up sending the hands home with a note to parents encouraging them to go over the hand with their child and go on a "hunt" for textures around the house. soft - cotton ball (or pom pom as shown here) smooth - scotch tape rough - sand paper hard - uncooked pasta bumpy - rocks or pebbles (aquarium pebbles shown here) Tongue -Taste The last sense is taste. We talked about this sense some last week when we made our friend mix. We will also be talking about it this week when we make pancakes. We didn't get a chance to do a specific activity for this sense, since I was out of the classroom for meetings that day. It was a fantastic week. We really got a lot accomplished. I'm really excited to actually begin teaching! The first few weeks are routines & rules, routines & rules, routines & rules, it's nice to see the light at the end of the tunnel! We also focused on our names last week. I'll have to include those activities in a future post. Hope your school year is going smoothly.

Learning, especially for preschoolers, should be a multi-sensory experience.
This week was fantastic! Our theme was the 5 senses. We tasted, smelled, listened, touched, and looked to complete our activities. Of course, we used shaving cream and scented playdough to help awaken our senses. Mr. Potato Head helped us label what body parts we use to discover the world around us. To learn about our sense of smell we soaked cotton balls with different oils/extracts/flavorings/powdered kool-aid and placed them in baby food jars. We had corresponding pictures for our little ones to choose from. Once the scent was identified, the little learners bingo dotted the square next to that picture. In the afternoon {our older pre-k learners} we also played a matching game with different scents. We paired up two of the same smells by placing scented soaked cotton balls in snack size baggies. One group of learners had to compare the different smells and find the partner with the matching scent. It was great fun! If you would like your own copy of 'What's That Smell?' Click HERE or on the picture. You can find the patterns to make your own 5 senses potato peep HERE. We also taste tested lots of different kinds of food, which isn't always easy for little ones! We were so proud of how brave they were! I found this idea on Pinterest and thought it was a great way to reinforce what we learned this week. We added textured wallpaper and/or sandpaper hands to show the sense of touch, bells for ears to show hearing, wiggle eyes, licorice mouth, and a scented cotton ball for smell. Boy howdy, did we learn a lot this week! Link up with Doodle Bugs Teaching to show what you did this week. Thanks for reading! Have a great day. :)
