This painting was sold at auction in 2008 at Christie's Auction House in London, UK as part the the ART NOMAD exhibition. All proceeds from the sale went to a children's charity. The Great Silk Road running from China to Genoa, near the outlet to the sea, was the main traffic artery for many centuries. Through it not only trade relations were established but also information and cultural values were exchanged. It is possible that the Great Silk Road was in some ways a school for many nations where they learned to understand and respect each other. The primary article of trade was silk, which for many years was produced only in China and later also in Central Asia. The tradition of artistically decorating silk came from the Far East. In the beginning, silk was used for clothing; nowadays it is also an important material for artists to create impressive works of art. The subject of Julia Ismambetova's composition - a peaceful chain of horse riders talking to each other, reading poetry and maybe also exchanging philosophical thoughts, was probably inspired by the poetic life of the Orient, or it might represent a fragment of the famous tale about the Great Silk Road. Or could it be that a gorgeous equestrienne at the head of the group is followed by a chain of poets serenading her beauty in their poems? The intense, hot colour of the background of the fancy ornament and of the earth underneath the caravan, which is reminiscent of patterned felt, alludes to the melodious sense of the poetics and unique meditative beauty of the East. ______________________________________ Biography: Julia Ismambetova was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from Almaty State University (ASU) in 1995. Between 1996 and 1998, she taught and lectured in the ASU Arts & Crafts department, before pursuing her artistic career full-time. Julia creates her art using a batik technique, and has been known to describe her self-expression as akin to ‘graphics on silk’. She freely admits that she was won over by the unlimited opportunities and diversity that batiks can offer to the artist. The batik technique is a rather complex and painstaking type of fabric painting, requiring the artist’s patience, skill and ultimately, mastery. Julia has been working with this technique for almost two decades now, and has succeeded to combine this ancient craft with her own unique style and modern elements. Julia has exhibited widely almost every year since 1998, in Kazakhstan, at Christie's Auction House in London (UK) and in New York City. Individuals and corporations around the world, including in Kazakhstan, Russia, Spain, South Korea, the USA, Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden and Israel, have purchased her original artwork for their residences and offices, and the rights to her images for marketing purposes.
