As we ease from summer into fall over this long, relaxing holiday weekend I thought it would be a good time to show our favorite places to relax... the porches. The farmhouse has three porches and we use them all! I've show the porches before individually, but they vary slightly from year to year, so I thought you might like to see all three together. the upstairs porch Accessed from french doors in the master bedroom the upstairs porch is a favorite for morning coffee, cocktails in the evening and quite moments right before going to bed. the front porch The front porch is a wonderful place for cocktails in the evening (we've even been known to don down coats and gloves and even sit here in the middle of winter!) It's a intimate spot that gets wonderful afternoon/evening light. We also use it often during the day for breaks from working in the yard. the back porch We use this porch mainly for summer lunches and dinners, and also for access to the kitchen . Hope you are having a wonderful holiday weekend. Happy Labor Day!

While we're outside doing yard work, I thought I would show you the back porch. Have a seat, stay a while... I'll bring you some sweet tea, and if you need anything just tell Ella to go get us! This photo is taken from the east meadow looking west towards the house. You can see the back porch which is off of the kitchen, and the upstairs porch which is off of the master bedroom. Our exciting news is that the barn room renovation (the gray barn with the french doors) is set to start in October! Iron table with Japanese fishing float placed in the base, and wicker chairs. The pillows are down-filled; being natural they actually weather great outside. Since I don't use a lot of pattern inside I liked the bold pattern of the fabric for this porch, and at $25 a pair (Homegoods) I couldn't have handmade them for less. I can't tell you how luxurious it is to have down-pillows outside! "do you need anything yet?!" This table is the ultimate in high-low decorating! The iron table base we picked up curbside for free while "junking" in Dallas. It was originally an old garbage can holder.... yes, I said garbage can holder!!, and it moved with us to New Hampshire! The antique marble top was found at a wonderful shop in Maine! So, for a mere $220 ($200 for the marble, and $20 for our neighbor to cut-and-weld the base so that it would fit perfectly) we now have a fabulous table! Antique copper tub filled with Japanese fishing floats and copper floats under the table. Antique French fountain ( here ) filled with conks (here)! Huge orchid (here)! Pair of antique Chinese vases (and yes, they sit outside all season) keep the silver-plated iron bird company! The antique Chinese green jardiniere holding the orchid is one of my favorite finds (I have a pair), but I'll save that for a later post. So glad you could visit... hope you'll come back soon!

I was looking at my recent pins the other day and realized that a solid half of them were cute white farmhouses. Clearly, I have houses on the brain! Our lease is up in June and we've saved enough for a decent down payment, so part of me (a big part) is itching to buy a house. But there are several other factors in play that might make it wiser [β¦]

Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall. - F. Scott Fitzgerald - It's that magical time of year in New England.... fall! As I wrote in my last post, fall is a three-month ceremony of change and beauty. It's more than a season, it is a spiritual ritual. I've been taking photographs to share with you for a while and have compiled them together for this post. This is the magic that is fall around the farmhouse..... The sun setting as seen from the front porch. The stone beehives at the entrance. The antique stonewall along the road. The kitchen dining table with its jarrahdale pumpkin and miniature white pumpkins on the mantel. There is so much color and beauty outside I like the interiors to be very simple this time of year. Menu board from last Sunday's lunch with friends! The front porch. The front porch with fall pillow covers. (a "favorite detail" of mine is to use down-filled pillow forms in all pillows on the three covered porches- it always feels so luxurious to sit in an exterior chair with a down pillow! (and yes, they hold up/weather beautifully.... well, maybe not if you're in Houston or Baton Rouge :):) View down the drive. The front meadow. Sweet Ella with her always-wagging tail! This is our largest and oldest antique maple tree on the property. It is at the entrance from the road and it will sometimes "weep" from the hole in the tree seen in this photo. It always reminds me of the spigot in the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" (remember that scene?!) as it never did this before we started tending and gardening the beds and grass around it! The drive up to the front door. "Little Red" that was Dan's birthday present last year wasn't pleasing the groundskeeper (aka Dan) and was traded in for the much bigger Ferris that has a larger cutting width (61" instead of 48") and has a triple bag grass (and leaf;) catcher on the back. The groundskeeper is very happy with new "Big Red!" The lighting and colors were spectacular on this day! Inside looking out.... You walk into the rooms of the farmhouse and they just glow! View from the upstairs guest room. View from the master bedroom. In this photo you see a ladybug on the window sill. Fall is also "ladybug season." ;) They make their way into the house in droves and hide in the cracks and mouldings through the winter. Try as you might, there is not a thing you can do to prevent this so one just welcomes them as "good luck!" View from the upstairs master bedroom porch. View from the upstairs porch to the terrace. The Nantucket Blue hydrangeas have turned pink, as they do in fall, but are still blooming away! They've been amazing all summer. You can see all the large (7-1/2' to 9' tall) evergreens that we planted in late summer in this photo towards the front meadow. Distant view to the hillside beyond. The setting sun.... Hope you're still here (?), and hope your fall has been magical too!

September 28, 2016 DECORATING MUMS NEW HOME SOURCE Since getting the ball rolling on my Mum's house move, her tastes are a changing! The more properties we are looking at, the more she is falling out of love with her dark mahogany furniture! (thank gooodness! ;)) She is also starting to love white walls which is also a plus, as we all know who else loves white walls don't we! We have looked at about 8 properties now and the one she likes in particular, it is a ground floor maisonette with its own front and back garden! It is also the closest to me of all the others and we have made an offer on it, which has been accepted!...there have been a lot of problems along the way! as indeed there always is...House Moving is not the best of events is it!...but we are getting there!...Having a garden of her very own is just the best thing and we are planning all the lovely plants that we want to add in there... SOURCE Mum has decided that she wants to have a more modern approach to furnishings...I guess the white walls and modern kitchen of the new property has helped with that! I can't show you it yet, as our offer has only just been accepted and I don't want to tempt fate...but it is perfect for Mum.... SOURCE We have been talking about how we are going to decorate it and looking on sites like Beytug for all of her new things...we particularly like the idea of having new bed linen in her bedrooms, she is liking more of the French shabby chic look but with a modern twist, so I will be looking forward to decorating her new home myself...not in my style...but following Mum's directions of course! There are a few adjustments to be made though, for instance she needs to have a shower cubicle added to the bathroom, as at the moment there is just a shower over the bath...making it almost impossible for her to get into it, what with her poor mobility! Also there are a few steps that need sorting out so that Mum can get into the garden, which will also make it easier access for Freddy in his wheelchair...so in other words we are making it all 'super human proof'! SOURCE There is a lot of work to be done now...as of next week I am going over to her London flat which is now Sold and we are going to have a big sort out! I am a dab hand at all of that now...she is fretting about it, but I have told her not to worry as I will be doing most of the packing and we are also going to be paying for decent removal men...not the 'likely lads' that I had, where they left everything on the walls and in the garden behind! lol!...I suppose you pay for what you get! So watch this space and I'll be updating you very soon. Bye for now. on September 28, 2016 Share this! Tags Happy House, happy styling Newer Post Newer Post Older Post Older Post
