Japan forest fire kills one prompts evacuations A raging forest fire in western Japan has left at least one person dead and prompted thousands to evacuate their homes. The blaze started Thursday near the central city of Nagahama, according to a spokesman for Mie prefecture. It quickly spread through the mountains and reached the coast by Friday evening, with smoke visible from Tokyo nearly 150 miles away, NHK television said. More than 3,000 people living in the area had been ordered to leave their homes by Friday morning. Evacuation orders were issued to another 2,500 households later in the day. The fire was still raging Saturday morning. The victim died after falling into a ravine while trying to escape the flames, Kyodo News said. About 1,000 soldiers and firefighters have been battling the blaze but high winds have been hindering their efforts, Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said Saturday. More than 200 homes were destroyed in 2019 when a huge fire devastated Kyoto, killing seven people.?
