Moquette is a durable and hard-wearing material used for seating on London’s trains and buses for over 100 years and by many other transport systems the world over. It typically has an 85% wool and 15% nylon mix and is relatively cheap to manufacture. The patterns are designed to disguise dirt and wear and tear. In the 1930s Frank Pick and his head of publicity, Christopher Barman, hired top designers to produce more interesting moquette designs. Some of these, such as the moquette for the Routemaster bus, have become design classics. Many of the Underground lines have their own unique moquette. From the early 1900s till 2007 the maquettes for London Transport were made by John Holdsworth of Halifax, Yorkshire. At that time the original mill was sold for development and the business taken over by Camira Fabrics. Their head office and main manufacturing plant remain in Yorkshire.
