Abstract Art Quilts intrigue me... I admire the work of Pat Pauly (shown here) I purchased her DVD Abstract Art Quilt Design from Start to Finish I invited my Art Sisters over today... We all brought our fabric scraps an open mind and a willingness to try something new... We are employing Pat Pauly's index card technique. It gives you a jump start to abstract designing! In a round robin method, we stitched a scrap onto a card then handed it off to the next person to add to. This continued until the cards were filled up. This was liberating! Also challenging! Very Relaxing! These are not finished pieces of art work... just a jumping off point... an inspiration. After a few hours... the completed cards were piling up.....yum! I think it helped to have input from all of us... If I had done these all by my lonesome... I think they all would have looked the same. I tend to stick to the same colors and my own style of design. Many hands make interesting work! At the end of the day, we took turns choosing the cards that inspired us: These are the cards I chose... These are the cards Kathi chose. Nancy and Carmen got out the door before I could snap a photo of their cards. Rather than stare at an empty design wall and try to design an abstract art quilt... We now have these inspiration cards to get those creative juices flowing... We have decided on a 20 x 32 inch format for our first Abstract Art Quilt. We will meet in one month and discuss our progress. I left my work table looking like this: Makes me want to sit down and make more cards! Our hay fields here @ home are ripening... we are getting the hay equipment ready to go... rather than the hum of a sewing machine, I will be listening to the roar of tractor. I will sneak time whenever I can to work on my first Abstract Art Quilt... I will share my progress as I go along. More to Come! CLICK HERE to check out the fabrics I created for this project. Color, by and far, is one of the most important elements of a visual art form, whether it is a painting or a quilt. Learn about how color influences the perception of your quilt.
The binding on the baby quilt is done, it's washed and ready to be sent to the new owner. Here are the finished pictures before washing and after. After washing Before washing Quilt Stats: Size: 41" x 53" Before quilting 39" x 50.5" After washing Top: 100% cotton Bating: Kyoto Bamboo Blend by Moda Backing: 100% cotton Flannel Working with bamboo batting in this project has been a delight. I love the smoothness and how everything lay flat nicely. There is no batting poking through the needle holes at all. The quilt drapes nicely and has a little weight to it. I think this is great for a baby or small children. I will ask for feedback from the baby's family to see how they like the quilt. The only thing that I don't like, in the slightest degree, is wrinkles after washing. The quilt looks a little puffy as if I used a thicker batting. Now it's time to pull some fabric for a new project. Remember the denim quilt I was making some months ago before I had to put everything aside to work on the baby quilt? You can read about it here. I have been working on quilting it along side the baby quilt. When I was stuck, couldn't decide what to do next with the baby quilt, I went back to work on quilting the denim quilt. Here is the sneak peek. While I'm working on quilting this quilt, I thought I would pull out some more fabric for the second denim quilt. Here they are.... What can I say; the fun continues...... Colour Blocking is a design of mine intended to be used with the 7 half-yard bundles that I feature on my personal website (www.quiltersdreamfabrics.com). To make this quilt, just choose a background of your choice (2 yd)... then choose any of the bundles I sell with 7 half-yard cuts. This throw sized quilt is a doable project for a careful beginner quilter, or it can be the "need it soon" project for a more experienced quilter. The large half-circles (12 1/2" cut, 12" finished) are easy to sew (and quick also!) Templates are provided for the half-circles and the half-circle holes, although you can use your own ruler if you have one that cuts 12 1/2" diameter half-circles and 11 1/2" half-circles. The technique described in the pattern avoids any significant wasted fabric and ensures your half-circles are properly shaped half-circles. The design has a bit of a mid-century modern vibe... brought to you by this mid-century modern lady. Instructions are included for two optional layouts. The nature of this design makes it easy for you to personalize the layout and create your own unique design. This is also a great stash-buster design. The quilt finishes at 60" x 72". It is a great size for use as a throw on a couch or chair, or as an accent piece in a bedroom. The clean lines create a quilt that fits comfortably in a contemporary decor.

This hanging art quilt is part of my "Rising" series; about the structures we build, and what comes back in return - whether from nature, or from human interaction with the natural environment. This piece considers the combination of sunset and glittering lights of buildings in the urban landscape.
