Architecture
Several years ago, my friend John told me that he and Sandra were going to build a dome. But I had no idea what a work of art they had created until, one week before it sold, I flew in and we drove the dusty road into the desert, until I gasped at the potent, ever-changing New Mexico skies, until we pulled up in front and John made me wait while he raced inside to set the stage for my first impression. The central courtyard reaches up to the sky-lighted, hand-painted sky far above. A Koi pond under floor controls the home's temperature and humidity. Views of mountains and clouds kept me staring out, hynotized by John's integration of landscape and inner space. Every detail had been carefully considered in his artist's mind: the staircase winding above the pond and fish, sculptor's creation of welding rods and stones. Adobe walls painted in layers and tones of long use. River rock flowing in streams across stone floors. A house so open that rainbows slip in and call you outside. And hot air balloons float by and settle down to rest nearby.
