Tomb of Richard Whalley (d.1583), his armoured effigy lying with a whale at his feet (a pun on his surname) and behind him three panels carved in relief depicting his three wives and the 25 children they collectively bore him! Unfortunately the tomb was moved in Victorian times along with other monuments into the cramped, dark and currently cluttered space beneath the tower. St Wilfrid's at Screveton is a very rewarding church. It is a fairly humble building with a short nave, aisles and chancel, but contains some good fittings; a fine Norman font, a beautiful 14th century misericord in the chancel and some interesting monuments under the tower, primarily the large tomb with effigy to Richard Whalley (d.1583, he even has a 'whale' as a footrest!) and relief panels to his three wives and 25 children! Part of a 15th century tomb chest with three damaged angels is set in the wall nearby (almost hidden by a display board). The carved royal arms looked interesting, but it was too dark to really make it out. This church appears to be normally open.
