Alex Gross nació en 1968 en Roslyn Heights, Nueva York y vive actualmente en Los Ángeles, California. En 1990, recibió un BFA con honores de la Art Center College of Design en Pasadena. En 2007, el trabajo de Gross fue objeto de una exposición individual en el Centro de Arte Grand Central en Santa Ana, California. Gross recibió la Beca de la prestigiosa artista de la Fundación Japón, y varias subvenciones de la facultad del Art Center College of Design. En 2007, Chronicle Books publicó su primera monografía, “El arte de Alex Gross”. Gingko publicó su segunda monografía, “Las discrepancias”, en 2010, y una colección de su serie de tarjetas en el año 2012, titulado: “Las pinturas de tarjetas de Gabinete de Alex Gross”. Alex es muy conocido por sus pinturas figurativas pop surrealista que tratan cuestiones relacionadas con la globalización, el consumismo, la marca, la entropía y el paso imparable de tiempo. Al hacer referencia a los libros de historietas, personajes clásicos de la televisión, y otras imágenes pop, Gross crea una mezcla ingeniosa de la publicidad, la propaganda y el surrealismo. En 2012, la exposición individual de Alex Gross, "Product Placement", satirizó la presencia ubicua e inquietante de las promociones de productos y la publicidad en la vida cotidiana. Gross ha dicho de la materia en su obra: "El mundo en el que vivo es tanto espiritual y culturalmente insípido. Es extremadamente violento, pero también puede ser muy hermoso. La globalización y la tecnología son responsables de los cambios maravillosamente positivos en el mundo, así como terriblemente trágico y consecuencia de la homogeneidad. Esta dicotomía me fascina, e influye de forma natural la mayor parte de mi trabajo". Hypnagogia is the barely-conscious state right before we drift off to sleep, where dreams and reality mix for a brief moment. It is also the title of Koplin Del Rio Gallery's upcoming group show in Los Angeles, showing April 11 through May 23.
