The trail begins by climbing uphill along switchbacks, but it is work the effort, as you will have some great views as you leave the beach for higher ground. The scenery quickly chances from beach to woods and eventually to rolling green hills. After the initial climb you will be rewarded with green rolling hills and distant views of San Francisco (on a clear day). Don't get too distracted by the views, as the hills are unexpectedly steep and a wrong step could lead to an unintentional game of rolling down the hill. There are some great overlooks where you can sit down to take a break and have a snack before continuing further. Soon you will reach Pantoll Campground, where there are bathrooms and running water. This is a great place to refill water bottles and camelbacks on your way to the top. Once you reach the summit of Mount Tamalpais, you will be rewarded with beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, Pacific Ocean, and the Bay Area. Near the summit, there are bathrooms and even a small concession stand where you can buy a quick snack before starting your trek back down the mountain.
