What do you get when you combine old pieces of lace, cakepapers, cardboard tubes and concrete? Candleholders, with delicate ornaments, ofcourse! These I've planned to place outside, to lighten an autumn evening. Now all I have to do is to plan a party were to try them out..

So I had a plain wooden tray lying around in my stash and decided to fix it up and use it to hold some of my supplies in my creative studio. I started off with a plain wooden tray. Pretty Drab! I painted it the same shade of teal as my dresser. Then I covered the bottom of the tray with the same black and white damask wrapping paper that I used on the back of my bookshelves. Love the end result! (Linking up to the parties listed in my sidebar)
Messy fingers? No way! Not with this recipe! Glurch, a.k.a. slime, is a HUUUUUGE favorite in our home for the kids AND for the mom. Here's why my kids love it: it feels really cool it's is easy to make it makes great "farting" noises (yes, my son made me promise to share that one) Here's why I love it: it's easy to make it's cheap it is sticky, slimy and ooey gooey (oops...the kids should be saying that) it does NOT stick to things (no messes on hands, no messes on tables and it washes right out of clothes) it is the perfect combination of slime and goop but no matter how hard you try it won't leave a mess Here is what you need: 1 bottle of white glue (4oz) 1/2 tsp Borax ("20 mule team")- found in the laundry detergent aisle water Directions: In one plastic bowl mix the glue and 3oz water, stir well. In another bowl mix Borax and 1/4 cup of hot water (add a drop or two of food coloring here to give it a color of your choice). Pour glue and water mixture into the Borax and water mixture and quickly stir. Dump excess water down drain. Viola! (My son liked this so much that I am planning on making a few batches of it for a birthday party treat bag for his party guests). Storage is easy, keep in a plastic bag or in a plastic bowl (covered)....I keep ours in the fridge for two reasons (one- it feels neat when it's cold and two- because if we have guests over it makes for a good conversation piece). Fun Fact: Want to learn something too? Glurch is a polymer (neither a solid nor a liquid but qualities of both). Wanna know what else is a polymer? Gum, Jell-O, plastic, and even your DNA!

This Magic circle tutorial shows a non traditional way. I have used this way for many years and find it a much easier way to start crochet projects.
I recently had a booth at a big, beautiful, swanky wedding show. One of the perks was getting to decorate our display. I thought that candles were a must, but we weren't allowed to use any exposed flame...only candles enclosed in votives. First I tried clear glass votives, but they were too plain and the light was too stark for our display. I wanted something wedding-like and I love flowers, so this is what I came up with. I got so many compliments on them at the show (even people snapping photos to keep the idea in mind for their own events), that I decided a tutorial might be in order. So, here are the steps to make easy (and beautiful) flower votive candle holders. Start with fabric rose petals (these can be purchased at most arts and crafts stores or online), a high temp hot glue gun, and rounded glass votive holders. If your petals are a mixture of colors or have any color fade to them, I advise separating them into piles first, based on the color of the petal. That way you can apply them to the glass in a systematic way that looks more like real flowers. Start by putting a small drop of hot glue at the base of each petal. It's important to use the high temp glue, since the glass will heat up when there's a lit candle inside, and you don't want the whole thing to droop or the petals to fall off. That would be a crafty wedding buzz-kill. Arrange the petals in an overlapping row, starting at the top of the glass. Allow the petals to reach up over the edge a tiny bit to hide the glass, but not enough to get anywhere near the flame and become a fire hazard. Continue all the way around the glass. I started mine with the pinker petals at the top, then added the white and green tinted ones as I made my way down the glass. I ended up doing three rows on this one, but you could do four (or more, if your glass is larger). The petals I used had a nice bend to them that made a very natural-looking flower shape when the whole thing was done. And here they are, all lit up. Beautiful!! Have fun with this project...
I love to carve rubber stamps with my own hands but I have to admit that this time my satisfaction is double: I created some handcarved rubber stamps purpose-sized for buttons. In that way, more than use stamps for paper, fabric, wood, glass, porcelaine, etc., you could create fabric covered buttons very customised... as you can see, the outcome shown in these photos is too cute! 1. Tree in a jar. Earlier this month I had a whirlwind trip to Miami and spent an evening window shopping with my friend, Pearmama. We wandered into Anthropologie and I gasped when I saw these fun jar decorations. They're made from Mason jars, mini-jars and salt shakers. They're filled with faux snow and have a little object inside. No water, glycerin, etc. Pretty simple. Priced starting at $18, I knew I wanted to come home and make some. 2. Also spotted - these hanging glass dome ornaments! They look like little fish bowls turned upside down and glued to cardboard. I got all excited and realized...I've actually made and shared several jar crafts! Here are my versions and then I'll show you some others I found online and from my crafty amigas! I think we should all make jar crafts this season! 3. Bottle Picture Frame. This is a Starbucks Frapuccino jar. I removed the label and inserted a family photo with some other objects. I used rub-on letters and accents and then tied a little medal at the front. 4. Candle Jar Shrine. These little shrines, I assembled using glass candles holders (you can also use small juice glasses). I didn't only decorate the inside, but also on top too! Here are the project directions. Photo by Cyndi Coon of Lovely Lula 5. Message in a Jar. Also this month, I helped organize the 3rd Annual Phoenix Craft Rave. My co-organizer, Cyndi Coon, hosted a DIY make-and-take project called "Message in a Jar." This was sooo cute, people loved it. This would be a great project for a girls night out craft or a wedding shower, etc. Here is a little video I recorded for you! (Pardon my shaky camera skills). Photo by Jaimee Rose 6. Bell jars! This is from another friend of mine, Jaimee Rose. She has a whole blog post all about bell jars! Very inspiring! Photo by Jaimee Rose. Her mom makes them every year and fills them with memory objects! Photo by Taylor Swift. 7. Snowglobe in a Jar. Us crafties have been making these for years, but Taylor Swift gave them a new sense of popularity when she made these for her friends and posted it on her Facebook page last year. Need a tutorial? I have one! Soooo...are you inspired to use jars n your crafting this season? What are you planning to make? Wouldn't it be fun to incorporate glass etching too? Which is your favorite jar craft? What else can you do with jars? Am I overloading you with questions? xo! Kathy :-)
I have been trying to find the "right" size eggs for the nests I am making but they were nowhere to be found. Then I found an awesome idea on a blog called Dreaming in Color. Go to this blog by clicking HERE. Deneen made some eggs out of clay she bought from Michael's. She shows on her blog how she made the eggs from clay, and how she painted them, so I will let you go there to see what she did. I am impatient and did not feel like going to the store to buy clay so I made my own. I found an awesome recipe years ago somewhere on the world wide web for baking soda clay. I have had a lot of fun making stuff with this. Let me show you how to make it.... THE RECIPE: 1 cup baking soda 1/2 cup corn starch 3/4 cup water Cook mixture on low heat, stirring occasionally until it resembles mashed potatoes. The first time I tried this recipe - it flopped. I got impatient at how long it seemed to take to cook, turned up the heat, and the mashed potato consistency quickly disappeared into a big hunk of powdery mess. I did become a professional at making this dough - BUT then I didn't make it for a while and I forgot about the KEY part at the end - this recipe cannot be overcooked. The mashed potato consistency is more like an instant mashed potato consistency - not like how I make my mashed potatoes. I will walk you through it so you can have success the first time. Add dry ingredients to a pot. Add the water. Once mixed in it looks like milk. *Just a note* I cut the recipe in half for the eggs I made. I was able to make more than enough eggs (24 little ones and two BIG ones plus a bit of dough to test if it is good to shape things with the next day). I couldn't think of anything else I wanted to make so yeah, I cut the recipe in half. Okay - back to the clay making.... The mixture is supposed to be cooked on low, but I kicked it up to medium low because it is a little painful sitting at the stove for a long time. It took about ten minutes for the mixture to start bubbling - once it starts bubbling it doesn't take long to get to this stage... Once it starts coming together take it off the heat. There is a fine line with this dough when it comes to being over cooked - but if cooked right - this clay is awesome! After the dough has cooled off a bit - take it out of the pot. The dough will be a bit wet feeling, but silky feeling too. Resist the urge to cook it more because it is a little wet. Shape the dough into eggs - or whatever - and let air dry. I tried saving some left over dough in a sandwich bag - but it become too powdery - so use it right away. I painted my eggs after 24 hours. Drying time depends on how big the craft is so play it by ear. So there you have it - make your own Robin eggs! Thanks for stopping by!
make a really great combo :) made these for kathleen (miss stamper on swapbot) in exchange for the super cute halloween rubber stamps she got me. she wanted a kawaii water bottle and other cute stamps. I made the little bubbles with the bottle and left them blank so she can draw faces in them :) the small matchbox is filled with other kawaii goodies :)
