When Mindy Carstairs, corporate lawyer for Giganto Oil, was reassigned from her Georgetown office to Bismarck, North Dakota she didn't complain. She knew she had to serve time in the hinterlands in order to make the next big move up the corporate ladder. She determined to learn as much as she could as quickly as she could to minimize her "boondock" stay. Consequently she would sometimes drive out to the fracking fields just to familiarize herself with the landscapes of her profession. One day in late September she was driving back to town at dusk. Her mind, normally churning, was now quiet with the dimming of the light. On the horizon the long train of tubular wastewater trucks reminded her of elephants. In her revery she didn’t notice the lights turning red. Ahead two wastewater trucks had collided, busting one open and sending it crosswise to traffic. Too late to avoid hitting the cars in front of her, she swerved into the left lane and t-boned the wounded tanker. Drivers in the cars who had stopped in time saw her flying from the car and then disappear behind the embankment. She landed in a pool of brown soupy water that when churned up revealed a more sickly green goo. Around her the bodies of dead birds, stuck and suffocated in the sticky brew, stared at her through the glassy eyes of death. “I don’t want to die,” she thought.
