Published by Taschen, Aalto covers the career of the Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto (1898–1976). Aalto became famous for his warm, curving and natural style that characterizes his buildings, furniture, luminaires and tableware. The book was written by Finnish writer and art historian Louna Lahti who worked for the Alvar Aalto Society for many years, and it is part of Taschen’s Basic Architecture series that presents life and work of internationally renowned architects with approximately 120 photographs, sketches and drafts. Editor of the collection is the German art historian Peter Gössel. Discover the gentler face of modernism in this introduction to Alvar Aalto, the Finnish architect who defied the slick geometries set by the International Style to prioritize soft, poetic, undulating forms. Whether a villa, a sauna, or a lamp design, Aalto’s organic structures championed environmentally sound and progressive design with a deep-rooted sense of humanity and home.

Arquitectura -- Siglo XX -- Finlandia.

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) is recognised today as one of the great masters of modern architecture and Scandinavian design. Aalto created his own unique style of architecture and design inspired by man and nature. He believed that good design should be a part of everyday life - therefore he created sensible products that enhance everyday living. Alvar Aalto would never say how his glass objects should be used, he wanted the user to decide.Alvar Aalto's first sketches for the vases were playfully called "Eskimo woman's leather trousers". Nature played a great role in Alvar Aalto's life and creativity. The undulating forms of the objects in the Aalto collection are like the Finnish landscape with its thousands of lakes - beautiful, alive and untamed. Glassblowers at the Iittala factory still meticulously handcraft the legendary vases that are variations on one theme, fluid organic shapes that let the end user decide the use. Interpretations of the shape in new colours and materials add to the growing Alvar Aalto Collection and remain true to his original design idea.It takes seven glassblowers to make an Aalto vase. Each of them has years of intense training in the many areas of glass craftsmanship. They preform the glass and then put it into a preheated mould. It is blown against the mould walls creating the shape of the vase. When this is done temperatures reach up to 1,100°C. Making an Aalto vase requires twelve work stages, sixteen hours and a great deal of craftsmanship and passion. Each vase is truly unique. A master blower can recognise his own handy-work as well as the fingerprint of his most experienced colleagues. Iittala - Making of Essentials from Freefarm - Sound Design & Music on Vimeo.
Alvar Aalto 400 ‘Tank’ Armchair for Artek. Designed in 1936. New, current production. As voluminous as it is comfortable, Armchair 400 was created by Alvar Aalto in 1936 for an exhibition at the Milan Triennale, where it was promptly awarded a prize. The chair owes its nickname "Tank” to its distinctive wide and sturdy armrests made of form-bent birch lamella and to its robust upholstery. The springy cantilevered frame offers a flexible, comfortable seat. A favourite since the 1930s, Armchair 400 remains effortlessly modern and can be upholstered in any material. About Alvar Aalto Recognised today as one of the great masters of modern architecture, Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was born in Kuortane, Finland. During a long and prolific career, Aalto designed buildings for almost all key public institutions, as well as standardised housing and private homes. One of the co-founders of Artek, Aalto left a legacy with lasting resonance. Aalto’s architecture is distinctively Finnish, strongly individual, and marked by a warm humanity. His buildings derive their aesthetic character from their dynamic relationship with their natural surroundings, their human scale, superbly executed details, unique treatment of materials, and ingenious use of lighting. Aalto began designing furnishings as a natural extension of his architectural thinking. His first modern piece of furniture was created in 1931-32 for the tuberculosis sanatorium in Paimio, Finland. Artek was set up in 1935 to market and sell his and his wife Aino’s furniture, lighting, and textiles, particularly on international markets. About Artek Artek was founded in Helsinki in 1935 by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Their goal was "to sell furniture and to promote a modern culture of living by exhibitions and other educational means.” In keeping with the radical spirit of its founders, Artek today remains an innovative player in the world of modern design, developing new products at the intersection of design, architecture, and art. The Artek collection consists of furniture, lighting, and accessories designed by Finnish masters and leading international designers. It stands for clarity, functionality, and poetic simplicity.
