AMERICAN VISIONARY ART MUSEUM (AVAM) is America’s official national museum and education center for self-taught, intuitive artistry. Since its opening in 1995, the museum has sought to promote the recognition of intuitive, self-reliant, creative contribution as both an important historic and essential living piece of treasured human legacy. The one-of-a-kind American Visionary Art Museum is located on a 1.1 acre wonderland campus at 800 Key Highway, Baltimore Inner Harbor. Three renovated historic industrial buildings house wonders created by farmers, housewives, mechanics, retired folk, the disabled, the homeless, as well as the occasional neurosurgeon–all inspired by the fire within. From carved roots to embroidered rags, tattoos to toothpicks, the visionary transforms dreams, loss, hopes, and ideals into powerful works of art.
American Visionary Art Museum : Reviews from families visiting American Visionary Art Museum . We went to the American Visionary Art Museum on a whim, and really enjoyed our visit. Thanks to the Blue Star Museum program for military, we got in free. I think it is priced a bit high for a family visit, but if you can get a reduced admission, I highly recommend the museum. Our visit lasted just about an hour. Parking always seems to be expensive in Baltimore, but not here. There is a good amount of metered parking just outside the museum. And, its free on Sundays. The entrance is the museum building closest to the the waterfront. There are several floors of exhibits. We walked quickly through with a four and a five year old. The rooms we liked, we walked through again. We did not visit the store. Much of the art has a modern feel and is constructed out of unusual materials. For example, the welcome mat is made out of tooth brushes. The next area is outdoors. This is one of the best areas for kids. There is a creative looking treehouse among many statues. The final building is more interesting for kids than the first. My daughter enjoyed a big pink dog named Fifi. My son enjoyed some robots. The were several exhibits where you push buttons and the art moves. I was concerned that the museum might not be appropriate for my young children. There is nothing more "dark" or gruesome than in a typical art museum. Also, the nudity and things of that nature were no more explicit than in any other gallery - especially including Renaissance Art. If youd feel comfortable taking your child to the National Gallery of Art, then you should be OK here too.
